April 7, 2008: Official Synopsis: The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan with star Christian Bale, who returns to continue Batman's war on crime. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as the Joker (Heath Ledger), who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces the Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.

January 22, 2008: Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence, and police said drugs may have been a factor. He was 28. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let him know the masseuse had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m. A large crowd of paparazzi and gawkers began gathering Tuesday evening outside the building on an upscale block in SoHo, where several police officers guarded the door. The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain," where he met Michelle Williams in 2005. The two had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year. He most recently appeared in "I'm Not There," in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan — as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best supporting actress. Ledger was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Night," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins." He's had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot," and played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball." Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Ledger family.

May 21, 2007: "The Dead Zone" star Anthony Michael Hall revealed to LA Daily News that he has a role in Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight, currently filming for a July 18, 2008 release. "I signed a confidentiality agreement, and I can't say which part I'm playing because it affects the story," said Hall. "I can't give away the suspense - it's a $200 million surprise, and I don't want to be the guy to ruin it." He added, "I'm excited about it - Christian Bale back as Batman. Heath Ledger is joining the cast as the Joker. Of course, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine return, and they're great." While he's shooting the sixth season of the USA Network series, he was able to make it for the first day of production in London the weekend before last. He said he's not scheduled to rejoin shooting until August, after "The Dead Zone" is wrapped. "They're shooting in London, Chicago and Hong Kong. My next dates are in Chicago, the third week of August with Morgan, then I get to go back to London." "It's really a great role," he added. "I'm in throughout the whole movie, and I'm really looking forward to working with Christian and Morgan and all these real Hollywood heavy hitters."

In related News: The new image of Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight has now been removed from IBelieveinHarveyDentToo.com. It's been replaced with red text that gives the error, "Page not found." If you highlight the entire page, however, you'll see a ton of Ha Ha Ha's with some letters here and there that don't belong. String those letters together and what do you get? - "See you in December." We assume you'll get a first look at The Joker in a teaser trailer for the sequel at that time. Warner Bros. has both Nicole Kidman's The Golden Compass and Will Smith's I Am Legend opening in December, to which the teaser could be attached to.

May 14, 2007: Warner Bros. Pictures have launched the Teaser Site online. Its not much more then the logo, which appears to be going at warp speed and breaking up. Still, the ball is rolling. Check the site for updates!

April 27, 2007: As reported on dailynews.com: "Eric Roberts has just been set to play a Mafia kingpin in Christopher Nolan's latest Christian Bale "Batman" movie, "The Dark Knight,", many speculating that it will be the role of boss Sal Maroni - the man who gives Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) his disfigurement.joining the production in June. It's the latest in an especially bountiful current crop of assignments for Roberts, including his ongoing series roles on "Heroes" and "The L Word," and his June Hallmark Channel presentation, "Pandemic," with Faye Dunaway."

March 13, 2007: Maggie Gyllenhaal is in final talks to star opposite Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, reports Variety. She'll play the role of Rachel Dawes, played by Katie Holmes in Batman Begins. Holmes dropped out of the project earlier in the year. The cast also includes Heath Ledger, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart. Nolan is set to start filming in the late spring or early summer. Warner Bros. Pictures is eyeing a July 18, 2008 release.

February 16, 2007: Aaron Eckhart is in final talks to play Harvey Dent/Two Face in The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. Pictures' sequel to Batman Begins, says The Hollywood Reporter. In Batman lore, Dent is the district attorney of Gotham City and an ally of Batman. After half his face is disfigured by acid, Dent becomes the insane crime boss known as Two Face. He chooses to do good or evil by flipping a coin. Tommy Lee Jones played the character in 1995's Batman Forever. "Knight" sees Christopher Nolan back in the director's chair with Christian Bale reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman are also returning. Heath Ledger will play The Joker.

February 15, 2007: According to LatinoReview, Maggie Gyllenhaal has been confirmed as the new Rachel Dawes. What do you think of the casting choice? Voice your say on our boards!

January 30, 2007: Katie Holmes is out, Rachel McAdams is in? Thats the word on the street. According to Batman-on-film, Rachel McAdams is the front-runner to replace the defunked Holmes [Katie Holmes confirmed earlier this week, she will not be in the movie]. The site goes on to say that the role may end up being "just a cameo", and if thats the case McAdams would not be interested, sources say. We'll keep you posted on this one.

November 18, 2006: According to ComingSoon.net, Warner Bros. Pictures has scheduled a July 18, 2008 release date for the Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight. Will Smith's Tonight, He Comes is also opening that month on the 2nd.

August 18, 2006: According to various news sources: "Ryan Phillippe may be set to take over from Tommy Lee Jones after reportedly landing the role of Harvey Dent/Two-Face in the upcoming Batman Begins sequel. Reese Witherspoon's husband will join Heath Ledger, who has signed on to play The Joker, and new Batman Christian Bale in The Dark Knight. Crash star Phillippe beat Liev Shreiber and Josh Lucas to the role of the scheming district attorney, played by Jones in 1995 movie Batman Forever, according to internet reports. Academy Award winners Sir Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman have also joined the cast, while fellow Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman is in talks to play The Penguin in the new film. " Thanks to 'Dream of the Endless' for the heads up!

August 1, 2006: As reported on JoBlo: "Whatever trepidation there was on Heath Ledger's part to assume the role of The Joker has apparently subsided as we've just received word from the studio that the sequel to the utterly kick ass BATMAN BEGINS will be titled THE DARK KNIGHT and will have Heath Ledger taking on the iconic role of the The Joker. Christopher Nolan is back directing and presumably a few faces from the original will be back, including Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox (although we only have confirmation of Heath Ledger as The Joker). It also goes without saying that Christian Bale is back as Batman. After the endless stream of names that have been bandied around for the role of Joker, we can finally put that rumor to rest." -Thanks to 'RyanOC' for the heads up!

July 20, 2006: Latino Review reports: "We were first to tell the world that Brandon Routh was going to be the new Superman. Now here we are at it again as we just got word from A VERY TRUSTED SOURCE that the offer last night was officially made to Heath Ledger to star as The Joker in the Batman Begins Sequel!" -Thanks to 'RyanOC' for the heads up!

April 12, 2006: According to LatinoReview, Robin Williams has expressed his interest in working with director Christopher Nolan. Williams worked with Nolan on the film Insomnia. When asked if he would consider the Joker role he said "Oh God, yeah!".

February 24, 2006: Warner Bros. has hired Jonathan Nolan -- Christopher Nolan's brother -- to write the screenplay for the untitled "Batman Begins" sequel. The studio has options on "Begins" star Christian Bale. "Begins" co-writers David Goyer and Christopher Nolan wrote a treatment for the sequel.

January 6, 2006: According to Batman-on-Film, "the latest casting rumour involves Josh Lucas ("Glory Road", "Hulk") for the role of District Attorney and future Two-Face Harvey Dent. Previously Liev Schrieber had been the most oft mentioned rumoured name for the role." No confirmations just yet.

December 23, 2005: Batman on Film is reporting that this year's most likely Best Actor Oscar winner may be up for the secondary villain role in the next Batman film. Here is the clip from the site: "I live in the Rochester, NY area, which is where Philip Seymour Hoffman grew up. The media has been covering his Golden Globe nomination for Capote, and in a recent interview with his old high school drama teacher (who remains close to him) on a local news program, she confirmed that Hoffman has been in talks to take on The Penguin in the upcoming BATMAN sequel and is very interested in the role". -Thanks to 'Batman-On-Film'

October 13, 2005: With the "Batman Begins" DVD just around the corner (you can order your copy in our store), new rumours for the sequel have been appearing on the web, here's a report from DarkHorizons: "Today a scooper by the name of 'Washington Post' has sent along a good summation report of where the project stands, re-iterating some old points, washing away others and adding one or two new rumours to the mix: Firstly, this guy, Lachy Hulme must be tooting his own horn. He's apparently known as the "who is this guy?" around the Bat-traps. I don't think he's got much of a chance in The Joker stakes. Paul Bettany, on the other hand, he's definitely one that's been discussed. Mark Hamill? Crispin Glover? Sean Penn? - BS. Several names have been mentioned, branded about - in addition to Bettany - like Ryan Reynolds, Michael Keaton (no kidding), and Johnny Depp - but its way too early to be saying so-and-so has got the role. OK, next. Katie Holmes - despite what the press is saying, how she wrecked the film and all - will be back. She might not be back (SPOILER ALERT) for the whole movie (SPOILER END), but she will be back. HARVEY DENT will be in the film. He won't be TWO-FACE until the sequel after, but he will be a main part of the next sequel. At the moment, it looks like Liev Schrieber, has got the gig. Also returning are Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Linus Roache. The same effects team, composer James Newton Howard, the same costume designer - all back. Couple of new 'secondary' characters (like 'Falcone' was in the last one) here too. One being talked about - Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. They're working on costume mocks for that now - I don't know that it's for sure that Cobblepot will 'transform' in this one though, or that they're just going to introduce him. They want a (kinda amusing) "Harvey Weinstein" type - but not necessarily a naturally-fat guy - just someone that can pull it off effectively". Don't expect much in the way of official answers to questions either. In an interview this week, Christopher Nolan repeatedly said he couldn't go into details about the sequel." -There ya have it. Lots of things still up in the air. Discuss on our boards!

August 9, 2005: "Batman Begins" producer Charles Roven told Sci-Fi Wire this past weekend that the returning cast is signed on for a sequel, the script is in the works, new cast members are being discussed and the only delay is an OK by director Christopher Nolan. "We all hope there is going to be another one, we're waiting for Chris Nolan to declare himself. We will do it after he does that" says Roven. The producer stated that it would be possible to proceed with another Batman movie without Nolan, but added that he would prefer Nolan to do another one. He also confirms that at present Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Katie Holmes and Gary Oldman have signed on, but added that it's WAY too early to talk about new cast members for the as-yet-untitled next Bat film.

July 8, 2005: A new report says Jim Carrey is interested in returning to the Batman franchise, but instead of reprising his role as The Riddler from Batman Forever, he wants to play the Joker. Nothing official yet.

July 5, 2005: Batman-on-Film is reporting that Aussie actress Isla Fisher may be the new 'love interest' in the "Batman Begins" sequel. Cinescape is reporting that pop star Justin Timberlake is being considered for the role of Two-Face. And names ranging from Sean Penn to Paul Bettany are being mentioned for The Joker.

July 4, 2005: As reported on comicbookmovie.com: Mark Hamill may be the Joker in the second Batman movie. Hamill, best known as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars movies but also a veteran voice actor as the Clown Prince of Crime in the 1990s Batman animated series, is reportedly on a short list of "known" actors Warner Bros. is considering. No unknowns are being considered, a studio insider tells Dark Horizons. While there's been no official casting yet, only a few meetings, a name could emerge now that Batman Begins is out, the source says. "Christian Bale was/is enough of a gamble ('Reign of Fire' and 'Equilibrium' made about a buck combined!), so, like this one, Warner are surrounding him with 'famous' faces. They've got their wish-list, and that's it. This guy, Lachy Hulme, it sounds like his people are pushing him more than Warner wants him - an unlikely chance, same with Crispin Glover, whose agent (not surprised) is pushing him ON Warner," the source says. "I've tried to get through to the powers-that-be that there's a couple of great actors on my agency's books that they should consider, but have been told by an exec there that it isn't worth pushing, because they have their wish-list, and it's got 'NAME ONLY' imprinted on it. "Honestly though, there's nothing, no-one really being considered at the moment....Mark Hamill's name has been casually mentioned due to his huge popularity in the cartoons as The Joker. Robin Williams, Sandler....your usual suspects," the source says.
