June 6, 2006: IGN FilmForce reports that Lionsgate has dropped the live-action adaptation of Marvel's Black Widow because of the less-than-stellar box office results for other female-driven action films. David Hayter, who was attached to write and directed, confirmed the news. "Marvel and I then spoke to a few other financing entities, but I never felt comfortable that we had found a place that was willing to take the movie, and the character, seriously." The Black Widow, an early supporting character in the Marvel Comics universe, is also known by her other identity: Natasha Romanova, a Russian spy who made her debut in "The Invincible Iron Man." She also was part of the superteams assembled in "The Champions" and "The Avengers" comics series. She ultimately became a love interest of Daredevil, gaining her popularity in the "Daredevil" comics. Hayter's version would have involved the Black Widow being given to the KGB at birth. The KGB grooms her to become its ultimate operative. When the U.S.S.R. breaks up, the government tries to kill her as the action moves to present-day New York, where she is a freelance operative. -Thanks to 'Superherohype' for the news! June 22, 2005: Marvel CEO Avi Arad updates on Black Widow: "It's going to be ['X-Men' writer] David Hayter's directorial debut. The script just came in, and we are doing what we always do with scripts — in this case, driving the writer/director crazy. David is very imaginative. Actually, his firstborn is named Natasha [Black Widow's human name is Natasha Romanov], so we think he is committed to the project." May 28, 2004: Got this in the mail today from 'Grifter', take it for what it is, a rumour: "While this is still strictly rumour, and she is not signed on yet....Rebecca Romijn [Stamos] may be cast in the lead role of Natasha Romanov, the Black Widow. Not sure if you have this info or not yet. The only thing I can tell you is that my contact is nearly never wrong." I can see it. We'll keep you posted!
