Quentin Tarantino Talks ‘Green Lantern’

By Landfill | December 7, 2009

I always thought it would be an amazing thing if Quentin Tarantino ever directed a Comic Book Movie. He’s been rumored to lead a few superhero films in the past, including Iron Man at one point, but it never happened.

Today, Quentin gives us a little info about how he was offered the chance to direct Green Lantern awhile back. Continue with this article to find out all the details.

“I was offered the ‘Green Lantern,’” Tarantino told MTV News. “Not since it’s been a script, but just like, ‘Hey we own the ‘Green Lantern.’ Would you like it?’”

Of course we know now he didn’t take the gig and it eventually went to Martin Campbell and he’s getting ready to start principal photography with Ryan Reynolds as the star. Still, it would have been great to see a comic book character through Quentin Tarantino’s vision.

The established director goes on to say he’s a big comic book fan and would have jumped at the opportunity if it was presented to him in his 20’s

“So there’s a little part of me that’s like, ‘Wow, if I was in my 20s, this would be the genre I’d want to specialize in,” he said. “But they weren’t making them then, or at least not the right ones. But there also is an aspect where I’ve kind of outgrown that a little bit.”

Tarantino is a bit past his 20’s but he still has that magical touch that can create a great film with a good story. Don’t believe me, watch Inglourious Basterds when you get the chance and you’ll see what I mean. Anyway, he’s past his 20’sĀ  and hanging out in his 40’s and says if he were to ever do a superhero film, he’d want to make it his own by writing the script.

“It wouldn’t be an existing comic book character,” he said. “I’m a writer. I’d want to use my imagination and not have to fight with geeks’ memories of how this character should be and, ‘Oh, I cast an actor as opposed to a bodybuilder’ or it’s not as good as the way [DC Comics artist] Neal Adams drew him.’ If I were to do something like that, I would want the fun of coming up with the superhero myself.”

Early reviews of Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass are being described as a “TeenageĀ  Tarantino” flick, so I assume next April will be the closest we’ll ever get to seeing something based on a comic book character through the eyes of Quentin Tarantino.
