Danny DeVito Talks ‘Batman Returns’
By Landfill | December 9, 2009
Back in 1992, Danny DeVito gave a great performance as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns. I’ve seen a few comparisons and the question was asked who gave a better performance as a Batman villain, DeVito or Ledger? We’re not here to answer that question or debate about it but we are bringing a few quotes from the actor today reminiscing about working with Tim Burton back in the 90’s. Continue with this article to find out what he had to say.
“I loved being with [Burton] on the set. We love hanging out,” DeVito told MTV News. “I love to watch where he’s going, what he’s trying, all the different things he does.”
DeVito recalls all the heavy make-up, the prosthetics along with the huge suit he had to wear to get into the character of the penguin. He says he remembers back when it was a good thing when an actor was forced to go through such torture.
“Talking about ‘Batman Returns,’ he’s got me in this armadillo suit and I’m in a place that’s so freezing — the stage was so cold — I was the only one comfortable,” he laughed. “Everyone’s walking around in scarves and hats … I’m in pounds of latex or whatever the hell it was. I had a great time with him.”
It’s interesting to note that Batman Returns was one of the first Comic Book Movies to give full creative control to a director. After the very successfull Batman film from 1989, Warner Bros. had to bring Tim Burton back for a sequel. His sequel turned out to be a great CBM which featured Michael Keaton returning as The Dark Knight with Devito as Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman.
With Burton having complete control, he was allowed to make the film how he wanted and gave his actors a direction he wanted the film to go. If you’ve watched the film, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Although “Returns” is a very dark take on Batman, it’s still considered one of the best by critics and fans alike.
I have to say that I really enjoyed Batman Returns because you really get to see the world through Tim Burton’s eyes. He has a special way about doing things and “Returns” is a great example of that. The acting in the film was great by every player including DeVito. I say take some time this Christmas season and watch Batman Returns to enjoy something good from the first Batman film franchise.
