‘The Crow’ Flies Forward

By Landfill | November 23, 2009

Ryan KavanaughAbout a month ago we told you the Crow reboot was in development and the script written by Stephen Norrington was finished. The producers over at Relativity Media really enjoyed the script.

Today Ryan Kavanaugh, a relativity producer, gives us our latest update concerning The Crow. Continue with this article to find out what’s going on with the upcoming CBM.

While promoting his new production Brothers, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire, io9 had the chance to ask Kavanaugh a few questions about The Crow reboot. Their first question was about the script.

“The script is great. We’re very excited about it. The Crow is definitely going to happen, we’re just getting all the pieces together right now. It’s not officially greenlit, but it’s going to happen… I think in a couple months we could have the package together for sure.”

Kavanaugh said he couldn’t talk about any potential casting but they’re keeping an eye open. “We’re in discussions….I think it’s something cool, we’re approaching it differently. It’s really a whole relaunch of the franchise, much more of a dark superhero type.”

The producer also said the actor they want will be a known or unknown depending on who they choose. “It will be an actor you’ve heard of, yes. We’re not ruling anything out. We’re looking at both, with the very well known and the ‘very talented but they may not be quite there yet.’”

Kavanaugh was asked if The Crow would have the same make up seen in Alex Proya’s 1994 film starring Brandon Lee. He said, “No, totally different… He’ll have makeup, but it will be different. The best way to compare it is the first Batman and Batman Begins. In terms of their look and feel and character.”

Speaking of the first Crow film, the producer said the reboot will have the same dark and gritty feel to it. “We’re sticking to the flavor of it. We’re just relaunching it and making it with a much more present day character, someone more relatable to everybody.”

It sounds like they’re going in the right direction for The Crow. With all the dark and gritty scenes, it shouldn’t cost that much to make. It shouldn’t be that hard to give it some quality either. I think Kick-Ass sets a good example of how a CBM can be made on a budget.

I realize they are completely different characters and comic book genres but they don’t involve a large amount of special effects and don’t need a big star to succeed.

As for casting, I have no idea but you can share your ideas with us in the comments.

Not a chance this movie is even decent, let alone as good as the original. It’s been my favorite movie for like 15 years and I have no idea why anyone would want to redo it or change it in anyway – every Crow fan i ever met agreed with me and I’m really confused why people are optimistic the Crow fans will go and see this film at all.

Hell, we prolly wont. But they’ll be a big name and a few good action shots for the trailer and it will still do fine at the box office and armies of teenagers who dont even know who brandon lee was will love it and think it’s brand new.

    @ Jay Soulless

I’ve also been a fan since the first movie, and I was very pleased with City of Angels. After that, it’s like they stopped trying and wanted to change the crow into something it wasn’t. I’m actually very eager to see if they’re true to their word. Going back to the dark, gritty, and honest style of the first one would be the right move

as for casting, Stuart Townsend could be a good choice, but I personally would prefer Jim Caveziel, Ben Foster, or Luke Goss(if not the Crow, then he would make an awesome villian)

I’m not opposed to this getting made. Even though Brandon Lee was awesome I believe there could be an improvement made with this franchise. Improving the characterization of the actors for one. The sequels were all garbage.
