James McTeigue Talks ‘Superman’
By Landfill | November 18, 2009
At the beginning of October we gave you James McTeigue’s take on Superman. In short, he wanted to reboot the character without an origin story and make it darker in tone, something similar to the current Batman films.
As of right now, it’s unknown if McTeigue actually has some insight for the next Man of Steel movie but he does talk quite a bit about the DC Entertainment character. Besides his plans for a fresh start, he’s said in the past he might or might not have a hand in the future of Superman on film. Today the director updates us where Superman currently is in development.
While speaking with MTV, McTeigue said Superman, “Is in a weird place at the moment. They’re trying to work out what they’re doing. Warner Brothers is trying to figure out their next move on it. There’s some things you can do with the ‘Superman’ franchise, there’s other things you can’t do. So it hasn’t gone anywhere.”
Of course we’ve already explored Superman’s legal battles and we know now they can’t show his origins, something McTeigue wants to stay away from. There are also a few key words DC can’t use but that’s not really a big issue at the moment.
Also, this confirms that DC Entertainment hasn’t made any movements for their characters since being created back in September. Even though it’s only been a few months, we need to hear something soon.
McTeigue goes on to say Superman, “Is ripe for a retooling,” while explaining when Superman starts back into development, he’d love to do it.
A darker Superman is exactly what DC Entertainment is looking for, they have said this before, and will most likely go this route once they know what to do with Kal-El.
It will be interesting to see because Superman isn’t the type to be taken to a darker tone, he wasn’t created for that. Batman, on the other hand, is perfect for that tone. He was created out of fear, he takes that fear and turns it onĀ his enemies so they feel his dread.
Whatever they decide to do with Superman, we’ll be reporting on is as soon as the news breaks so keep checking back for the latest updates involving The Man of Steel.

I say give him a go! Before some puppy dogs & ice cream director takes it! I wanna be able to see this film & question supermans motives. A uneasy feeling ! Not a boyscout with a cape! He’s lived long enough pn earth to a little bitter & fed up with the world!!! Give his some hair on his chest & a five o’clock shadow!!!

It depends on how dark they go as to whether or not the storyline is acceptable. I mean, if you just give it a little angst, Superman will come out looking like an old emo boy. If you give it too dark a tone, it won’t come out looking like Superman at all. It’s a very delicate balance with such a huge icon. It seems like there is a lot of story on Superman that no one seems interested in telling on the big screen. If it were up to me, I would love to see an older Superman like Kingdom Come. Maybe the events leading up to Kingdom Come. Like, what would have to happen for Superman to turn away from helping the Earth, and what would eventually turn him back. That would be a story worth telling.
