Is John Cusack Eyeing ‘Priest’ or ‘Preacher’?
By Landfill | November 9, 2009
John Cusack isn’t necessarily known for making comic book movies but with the sudden rise in popularity after the great year of 2008, who wouldn’t want to make one right? The actor was bound to be asked if he’d ever want to do a CBM and of course he’d have an answer.
Cusack was making the rounds recently promoting his latest film involving the end of the world, 2012. While talking to io9, the actor was asked if he’d been eyeing anything particular involving comic book characters.
After praising the adult oriented comics and their film adaptations, the actor pondered for a minute to think if there were any good characters left that aren’t necessarily superheroes that Hollywood hasn’t made yet.
“Yeah, I can, there was one or two that I heard of that sounded really cool. One of them was about, I think… it’s a vampire and a killer, and they’re on the road, and it’s this really strange story. I thought that sounded pretty cool. Also some of the obscure ones, I don’t know if there are any more superheroes left.”
Of course with that line, the interviewer jumped at the opportunity to ask the actor if it was actually Preacher Cusack was talking about.
Cusack responded with, “I think it might have been Preacher,” while wondering if it was indeed that certain character he was referring to.
Last we reported, Preacher was barely moving forward. We heard back in January, John August was writing a script with Sam Mendes attached to direct.
More recently in September, the director confirmed August was writing the script assuring us it’s good. “It’s getting closer,” said Mendes about August finishing up the script.
The actor had one more interesting line during the interview. He said he wouldn’t mind playing either of the top two roles, “I’d say either the vampire or the priest. One of those two guys.”
I find the last line interesting because he actually uses the word “Priest,” another CBM currently in production. It’s very possible the actor was referring to Priest, starring Paul Bettany and Cam Gigandet, all along. In fact, Cusack’s description sounds alot like Priest rather than Preacher.
The upcoming CBM, Priest, follows a vampire hunter (Bettany) who goes after a gang of vamps in order to find his niece who have been kidnapped by the murderous clan.
Anything’s possible with the actor’s vague quotes but we know for a fact he’s not in Priest. I know for a fact that I wouldn’t find him believable as John Custer or Cassidy in Preacher.

It sounds like most actors looking for some rather obscure yet still notable reference into the comic book world. It’s not so much a line of interest to me more so than an attempt and name dropping, of sorts. I think it’s best to have actors interested in the roles rather than actors trying to get into a niche genre.
