David Goyer Updates ‘Ghost Rider 2′

By Landfill | November 4, 2009

Back in September we told you there was a Ghost Rider sequel in the works but we weren’t exactly sure how it would go . The story they’re going to use is based on a screenplay written by David Goyer a few years back. Last word, Goyer was hard at work adapting the script for a younger audience. That last line sounds negative but what it means is it’s going from a Rated R script to a PG – 13. Continue with this article to see what Goyer had to say.

“It’s not exactly a reboot,” Goyer recently told MTV. “I hate to say it’s more realistic, because he’s got a flaming skull for a head, but it’s a bit more stripped down and darker. It’s definitely changing tone. What ‘Casino Royale’ was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to ‘Ghost Rider.’”

Goyer goes on to say the script will be done soon and Nicolas Cage will be back to reprise the role of the anti-hero. He also updates the project with a filming schedule due for next year sometime.

“This story picks up eight years after the first film,” said Goyer. “You don’t have to have seen the first film. It doesn’t contradict anything that happened in the first film, but we’re pretending that our audience hasn’t seen the first film. It’s as if you took that same character where things ended in the first film and then picked it up eight years later—he’s just in a much darker, existential place.”

I really like what Goyer is doing for the character. He said his script has been shelved for quite sometime because of the tone in it. He also says he doesn’t have to explain much about it since the script’s been on the web for awhile.

“My script is out there on the Internet,” he said. “We’re not changing much from it. It’ll be significantly the same script.”

I like that we’re not going to have to deal with an entire origins story and that we’ll be distanced from the first movie by a couple years. Let’s just cross our fingers that toning it down from R to PG-13 doesn’t cut the legs out from under it. I’m interested to see what comes of this.

I like that too, origins are lame these days. I’d understand if the character wasn’t popular and no one knew how it went. We should never have to see Spider-man’s origins again.

Oh and Goyer says they’re not changing much to the script to tone it down. I hope it’s nothing like the first Ghost Rider.
