Willem Dafoe as ‘Batman’?
By Landfill | October 27, 2009
Willem Dafoe will always be remembered for breathing life to the Spider-man villain Green Goblin. He did a terrific job in my opinion and deserved a bit more recognition than he received. I especially enjoyed the recurring presence in the spidey sequels. Anyway, today’s news doesn’t involve Spider-man but another comic book hero who goes by the name of Batman.
IMDB has a bit of trivia for the actor that says he was in the running to play the Joker back when Tim Burton had control of the caped crusader film. Not much is known about the rumor so MTV had to clear the air and went straight to Dafoe for the official word.
Dafoe denied the rumors of being contacted by anyone for the Joker but goes on to say he was rumored to play Batman. “Very early, they talked to me about playing Batman,” Dafoe told MTV News.
We all know Michael Keaton got the role, something Warner Bros. and alot of fans didn’t enjoy at the time. But the surprise casting of Keaton was awesome because he played Bruce Wayne/Batman perfectly.
I can see why they wanted a bigger name for Batman, Dafoe had recently played Jesus in Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ, which is still a great movie by the way, and would have played Batman with the same integrity and dedication. Who knows exactly what could have happened if Dafoe were cast but it’s certainly wishful thinking indeed.
Would you have liked Dafoe as Batman? Did you like Michael Keaton’s Batman? Tell us what you think in the comments.

Dafoe would make a great Riddler in the next nolan’s Batman! Keaton did a good job for the 90s. Clooney was the cheesiest Batman! Kilmer was a good bruce wayne not batman.it’s be nice to see a villian that hasn’t been in any of the films yet. Maybe Croc or Azriel? I guess what i’m saying let’s see something fresh & new . Not a take ona villian already done.

Michael Keaton was the only good Bruce Wayne and Batman. Val Kilmer and Christian Bale were good Bruce Waynes, but terrible Batmans, and that whole George Clooney movie doesn’t even exist to me. Not sure how Dafoe would have been as Batman. He’s kind of ugly, so he would be that convincing as a ladies man.

I meant to say he wouldn’t be that convincing as a ladies man.

I think Azriel would take to much time to set up, definitely a two picture kind of thing.
I do agree it would be nice to see something/someone original but Batman has popular villains, using a not so popular villain wouldn’t work to well. I know that sounds bad but it’s true.

Dafoe should play Mr. Freeze. He would be perfect with his cold, calculating tone and his sinister accent paired with very emotional performances. Now, I can’t think of anyone else who could play Mr. Freeze other than him, but Dafoe could make a good riddler as well… or maybe Black Mask or Hush

Dafoe is awesome at villainy, period. Any villain they gave him he could do. Hero, no. I would love to see him as the Riddler. I never thought of Freeze, but he would be amazing with that role as well.

For me there is no better Bruce Wayne/Batman like Christian Bale, his performance is amazing, a total package indeed.
As for Willem Dafoe, I can see him as Mr. Freeze, he could really do and outstanding job in that role.
And if we are picking new villains, one that haven’t been played in the Bat-films yet, I would say Clayface, he is popular enough and could adapt well in the setting Chris Nolan have developed for Batman. But given that same setting, I wanna see the take on The Penguin and The Riddler, because I believe with Nolan’s take they could give us the fans, something really amazing, like what happened with The Joker.

They should play out the long haloween story line with holiday..Falcones son, but i also agree that black mask and hush would be good choices.. a very dark bane would be a good film as well..

Bane could be a great villain if they make him intelligent and give him a motive, not like the ‘roided out, “Batman…Crush!” that we we’re given in Shumaker’s attrocity known as Batman and Robin. The ONLY decent part of that movie was Uma Thurman, and she wasn’t even that great as Ivy, but at least she did a better job than everyone else that worked on that film.

Joseph Gordon Levitt is filling Heath Ledgers role in Nolans new film and he does look kinda like the late great Heath! So I wouldn’t be suprised to see him looking “so serious!”
I think they should stick to what they had in mind for the 3rd movie, Ledgers performance was outstanding and will likely never be bettered, but some said the same about Jack Nicholas’ performance!
Levitt is a similar age, build, look and has great performances behind him!

I agree with you phil about Gordon Levitt but I don’t think where you heard he was actually going to be in the next Batman film playing the joker since there isn’t a go ahead for the Dark Knight sequel yet.
I have heard his name thrown around for a replacement joker along with James Franco.
Interesting bit of info, Nolan went after Franco for a role in his latest film Inception but he had prior engagements which opened the door for Gordon Levitt. Maybe, just maybe someone reads these comments from the fans.
