Sam Raimi Talks ‘Spider-Man 4′ Villain

By Landfill | October 12, 2009

villainWe recently gave a few updates concerning Spider-man 4 from Sam Raimi the director of the upcoming CBM. In the last article we told you Raimi was eyeing a March 2010 starting date for principle photography. Today the news we bring is a bit different.

Sam Raimi sat down with MTV and gave a few updates about his next project. They broke it up into a few parts and today’s news is the second part.

MTV told Raimi about their recent poll asking the fans who they wanted as the villain for the next film. The fans voted Lizard with 29% as the winner and Carnage with 26% in a close second.

“I love the Lizard,” said Raimi. “There’s a great story there in the Marvel comic books about Dr. Connors. I’m less familiar with Carnage.”

Raimi paused for a bit thinking whether or not he’d spill the beans or not and reluctantly said, “I’m not allowed to say at this point.”

According to the source, we won’t see Lizard or Carnage with this statement, “As [Raimi] explained, it has less to do with the mention of a particular villain in an earlier film (as is the case with the Lizard) or about connecting the fourth film to another planned Marvel adaptation (see Carnage in “Venom”).”

Raimi went on to say that the villain will have Peter make choices and grow as a character. His story arc has to make sense and be fulfilled rather than just picking a favorite villain for another film. With Gary Ross still working on the touch ups to the script, everything isn’t certain just yet.

“What we’re trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome,” Raimi said. “Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain—and we’re trying this right now; we’re trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict.”

It’s a good description but no names of any characters yet. I have no idea who the next villain(s) will be but whoever they choose, it sounds like their taking it very serious this time around.

Who do you think the villain will be in Spider-man 4? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.

I wonder if that means he’s going to have to resist the temptations of Black Cat and her living-on-the-edge lifestyle. That would show how Spider-man would need to grow in terms of taking more responsibility for his actions and everything. But, there would more than likely need to be another villain along with the Black Cat.

I am looking forward to seeing the Lizard in x=screen, I feel it is about time. I just hope Raimi and company don’t feel pressured to bring in another fan-favorite to make money. Carnage should not be in a Spider-man film and I stand by the feeling that unless it’s rated R( which no more rated-R CBM will ever be made anymore) Carnage can’t work properly as he was intentionally created.

I don’t think Black Cat would be considered a villain at all to Raimi and company. I think we’re looking at Lizard and mysterio here but I could be totally wrong.

I agree Carnage shouldn’t be in a Spider-man film but with the ratings system these days, they could get by with alot of stuff. I mean just take a look at Dark Knight.

I don’t think the studio is going to pressure Raimi into anything this time since it didn’t work out well the last time they did that. He’s going to make the movie he wants and Avi Arad won’t be around suggesting Venom or Carnage in every other sentence.

If it really were Mysterio and the Lizard, I would be 100% happy. Those are two of my favorite Spidey villains. So the growth that he’s referring to would be what then, I wonder.

I know the source of the article says Lizard might not be a possibility but it would be great to see. I think he could grow to a point where he can’t have loved ones or people he knows in harms way, maybe set up a storyline where he actually does withdrawal from his family and stays away from everyone. Possibly in the next movie we see him start to come out of it and realize he can’t change certain things. I would assume Mysterio would find out who he is and start to bring in his special effects to mess with Pete’s mind.

I realize that’s not a very good storyline at all but it’s a possibility. I know Pete has went through those changes in the first two films but maybe he takes himself serious this time, especially with the death of his best friend Harry.

It’s gotta be the Lizard and either Mysterio or Kraven. There’s still Electro, Rhino, Vulture, Kingpin for #5 but please no Morbius! Do the Prowler before him…

I would love to see some sort of identity crisis. Spiderclone or doppelganger of even chameleon would really cause spidey to assess how to handle a PR problem. I would also like to see Jameson fund some sort of anti-spiderman project; scorpion, rhino and the like. How does peter handle this work vs. hero problem.
