Latest ‘Lobo’ News

By Landfill | October 22, 2009

You should know by now the DC Entertainment property, Lobo, will be directed by Guy Ritchie. This was announced a few months back and nothing has been announced or updated since then. Jeffrey Dean Morgan expressed interest in the role, he later clarified he wasn’t sure if he could play a blue guy, but that’s about it. Today we get something but it’s up to you to decide if it’s worth reading.

Lobo Producer Akiva Goldsman recently talked to the LA Times’ Hero Complex and First Showing clarified what was said. Goldsman talked about the Lobo and Guy Ritchie pairing and said they will shoot a test scene next month in November. “We’ve got the character design pretty much done,” Goldsman said, “and the test will get us moving forward to the next step.”

The producer was asked why they decided to go with Guy Ritchie instead of someone else:

There’s something hyperbolic and authentic about a Guy Ritchie movie. His best movie are deeply, deeply stylized yet they are all grounded; there’s a grit of stylization, which sounds like an oxymoron but it makes perfect sense when you’ve seen his films,” Goldsman said. “We’ve never seen Guy’s sensibility married to a project with such a large special effects budget.

Recently it was said that Guy Ritchie is Gung Ho for Lobo and can’t wait to make the film. He said it’s going to be very difficult to start the film next year, hence the test scene in November.

Mania has a source deep within DC Entertainment/Warner Bros. and that source gave a few updates to Lobo. They are getting ready for the test shoot and are starting to look at actors (possibly muscled?) to play the part.

“Lobo has to look like that, but the person being Lobo doesn’t necessarily,” the source said. “I’m not saying that’s how they’re gonna do it because they’re still trying to work that out, but for example Andy Serkis doesn’t particularly look like Gollum, you know? It’s all about performance.”

“Ultimately regardless of whether you do it all CG or its a guy in a suit, with CG, you’ll still end up doing a lot of CG animation. So do you need a celebrity? Do you need a name or do you just get someone who is good and who’s gonna nail it?”

The source names actor Clancy Brown for the part of Lobo. I’m not sure where you might have seen Brown, Mania gives a good source from a Highlander film but I’ll always know him as the punishing prison guard from The Shawshank Redemption.

“Wouldn’t he be awesome? I think he’d knock it out of the park,” the source said.

Of course by the last quote, Brown isn’t officially being cast but his name has been thrown around a bit. It’s a good choice, he does a ton of voice work for DC already and if Lobo’s computer generated, I wouldn’t mind him speaking with Brown’s voice.

Aside from Jeffrey Dean Morgan, this isn’t a bad choice but it could mean Lobo might be a CG film. CG is looking better as the years go on but I don’t think they’re at the point to give Lobo justice.

Only time will tell what kind of movie we get from DCE. Keep checking back for the latest Lobo updates.

Clancy Brown would be great for the part! He’s got that edge that Lobo needs & the acting chops for this movie to be done right. Brown was great in pathfinder! But does he have enough star power? Lobo isn’t the most known in broad audiences .I wouldn’t be surpriaed if Jason Statham gets the part. Guy loves working with him. I would expect a mostly english cast from ritchie. Just please no wrestlers for the part! Mickey Rourke could be the one in my opinion. If They need star power he’s got it the size , edge & acting skills to make it a blockbuster!

I think Clancy is the perfect choice if they go with a mix of live action/CGI ala Hellboy, even if they go straight CGI he has the perfect voice (also a recogniveable one) for the part.
As for a mostly english cast he has worked with all sorts from Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes to Gerard Butler (scottish) and even Jeremy Pivin. He is the kind of director that gets the right person (not counting Madonna) for the job

I would definitely see it if Brown was cast. He is a great voice talent and can act. Some of the stuff he has been in-Starship Troopers, Shawshank Redemption, Pet Cemetary, Highlander, The Hurricane-he is the voice of Lex Luthor in the Superman series, Mr Krabs in Spongbob so im al for it

Yeah when I found out he was the voice of Lex, I could see his voice as the character. I guess since the character would either be CGI or all make up, it wouldn’t really benefit the film to have a star.
