Kevin Smith Talks Disney/Marvel Deal
By Landfill | October 4, 2009
Some of you may know who Kevin Smith is. He’s directed a few films, most notably Clerks 1 & 2, Mall Rats, Chasing Amy, and Zach and Miri Make a Porno. While promoting his new book, he stopped by MTV to talk about anything and everything, something he’s really good at in my opinion, and spoke on the recent Disney/Marvel deal. Continue with the article to read some of Smith’s quotes.
Before I get to the awesome quotes from the great director, I’d like to point out that Smith doesn’t care about censorship. You’d know this if you’ve seen any of his films. So by saying that, I’m giving you the readers a warning for strong language. If you can’t handle it, don’t read any further than this.
“I saw a lot of cats who were like, ‘Oh, this is the end, they’re raping my childhood again,’” said Smith of the fans of Marvel before the takeover.
“No, they’re not,” he said. “[DC]’s been owned by Time Warner…for many years now. … If you like DC’s output, why the fuck is Marvel being owned by a corporate entity going to be any different?”
Smith went on to say that Disney isn’t dumb, they know how to market things to the general audience and they’re not trying to, “put everyone in fucking mouse ears and shit. Disney was here long before us and they’ll be here long after us. They’ll be here when it’s just the cockroaches and radiation.”
“The Disney company looked at a hole and said, ‘We don’t have boys. Right now we have girls. We’ve done that princess thing to death. We have every fucking girl. There’s not a girl in America of middle-class family and above who doesn’t have a fucking Disney princess costume somewhere in her closet,” he said. “They don’t have that with boys. You can’t say the same thing: ‘Ain’t a boy in America that doesn’t have a Peter Pan costume.’”
“They identified that boys loves comics…and this Spider-Man and this Iron Man seem to be doing things,” Smith said. “They’re like, ‘Let’s buy it. We don’t have to develop a boy brand. We’ll buy a boy brand, plug it into Disney and then go on. Now we’re sated. We’ve now got this part of the market.”
Smith went on to reassure fans that they won’t be seeing any crossover between Disney charactes and Marvel characters because that wouldn’t be good business. He goes on to say, “They’re going to let them keep doing what Marvel does. That’s why they bought them.”
“They said, ‘You guys are obviously successful at reaching a demographic we can’t—[so] continue to do so!’” he laughed. “We just want to make the money from it. We’re Disney!”
Interestingly enough, since Smith has/had a deal with Miramax who is owned by Disney, all of his ideas for films with Miramax are owned by Disney forever. Smith said in a tweet on Labor Day a few weeks back, “Dis[ney] also owns Dante & Randal, [From Clerks 1 & 2] and didn’t “kill” them. Everything’s fine l’il shaver. Think pussy.” If that last bit isn’t reassuring I don’t know what is.

I didn’t need any reassurance about the subject ‘cuz since I read the news I knew that it was good business and eventually the best decision MARVEL could have ever made. But it’s good to read it from someone more connected lol.
About the crossover, I think it can work and be huge for everyone involve, so imagine an animated film by Pixar with MARVEL and Disney characters rated PG, it would be amazing and pretty entertaining in my opinion.
As an example, there is the video game Kingdom Hearts developed by Square-Enix and Disney and the sequel Kingdom Hearts II, which is a crossover between the disney characters and the characters from a few of the popular Final Fantasy games, and the result was fantastic!.

Yeah I’ve heard of Kingdom Hearts and it works well in a video game, I just don’t like the idea of having Disney and Marvel characters colliding. It’s just not meant to be. If they wanted to do it in a video game, I’m all for it but not any sort of film.
As for reassurance, I think alot of people are still waiting to see if Disney’s going to ruin this. If you remember, our last poll asked what people thought and the majority of people hated the idea of Disney buying Marvel. I realize it’s good business but I can see why people would feel uneasy about the whole thing.
With this article, I tried to lighten the tension so to speak and let everyone laugh with Kevin Smith’s comments.

I see, well only time will tell I guess for those that feel uneasy.
As for the idea of a crossover film between Disney and MARVEL, I think it could work, and be in an alternate reality, there are endless of those, and with the right story, a mix of adventure and wonder and humor and fantasy, it could be good.
