Jon Favreau Talks ‘Iron Man 2′ & ‘Avengers’

By Landfill | October 14, 2009

jon-favreau-iron-man2There’s been alot of news lately pertaining to Iron Man 2. We’ve heard tons of stuff from the cast along with a few updates here and there after principle photography was finished a few months back. Today we get yet another update but this time, it’s from the guy in charge, the director Jon Favreau.

While promoting his latest film Couples Retreat, MTV had a chance to ask the actor turned director a few questions about his comic book related films.

First off, the director said he will not be directing the Avengers where Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and I hope Hulk, team up to stop a huge force that would need a powerful team to take it down.

“We want to reinforce a lot of the stuff we started to tip off,” Favreau said. “‘The Avengers’ is a much larger concern for Marvel and Kevin Feige, who runs Marvel. They’re going to be doing ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America,’ and the way we might start to tease those things in this movie, some of it is stuff that we’ve discussed [and] some of the stuff you do last-minute as you figure out how that stuff is coming together.”

“It’s an evolving, amorphous thing,” he explained. “If we decide and commit too early, the secret always gets out.”

the source gives  a good example of things leaking out like Sam Jackson’s cameo after the credits from the first Iron Man film. The scene was intentionally left out of any press screenings in order to keep it a secret which worked to no avail.

“As soon as we shot the Nick Fury thing—we had a closed set and nobody was supposed to know about it—a week later somehow it was all over the Internet,” said Favreau. “It’s a little bit of a cat-and-mouse game.”

Actual quote about the Avengers film, “They’ll have to [find a different director], because I’m not going to be available,” he explained. “It’s something I’m being the executive producer on, so I’ll definitely have input and a say.”

“It’s going to be hard, because I was so involved in creating the world of Iron Man and Iron Man is very much a tech-based hero, and then with ‘Avengers’ you’re going to be introducing some supernatural aspects because of Thor,” he continued. “How you mix the two of those works very well in the comic books, but it’s going to take a lot of thoughtfulness to make that all work and not blow the reality that we’ve created.”

Favreau went on to explain that his singular view on Iron Man isn’t a good thing when it comes to the Avengers assembling. “That’s why it’s good that you have the guys from Marvel like Kevin Feige, who knows the books well and has been involved with the making of all the movies, and he’ll be very involved with ‘Thor’ and ‘Cap,’” said Favreau. “You need somebody who has the perspective of all the different franchises to bring them together. I have the myopic vision of just knowing and loving Iron Man.”

Since Favreau has taken his name out of directing Avengers, who would you want to direct the Marvel team-up? Tells us what you think in the comments.

Someone who’s been directing the films for the other characters makes some sense, but isn’t necessary. I know Brian Singer is the man but I got no one in particular so long as they treat it as the oppurtinity it is for a director.

I like Louis Leterrier’s idea of spreading the Avengers movie over the whole summer making four 90 minute movies instead of one 120 to 150 minute one and like a TV show have each respective director from the individual installments take a segment. It would truely be the summer of Marvel

I liked that idea too but I don’t think the general audience is ready for something like that. I think by the fourth film, everyone would have forgotten what it’s all about.

The idea is great but with the current deal they have with Paramount, I don’t think they could make more movies. I guess they could say it’s one big movie split in four pieces but it might not work, it’s never been done before.

Too much trouble for the studios. Sony has the exclusive rights to Spider-man, I don’t know if they would want him crossing over in other films. It would be nice to hear something from someone to see if it would be possible, but I doubt we’ll get it.
