Jon Favreau Talks ‘Cowboys & Aliens’

By Landfill | October 19, 2009

favreau cowJon Favreau’s been in the news lately. He has a new movie out now called Couples Retreat, he’s currently editing Iron Man 2, and he is rumored to be directing Cowboys & Aliens with Robert Downey Jr. to star. In the past, it was confirmed he was the director but he comments on the rumor and says nothing is official just yet.

“We’ve been discussing the idea of me directing it. I like the project, they like me,” he said. “It’s all about release dates and windows and availability.”

“When you’re a director on these projects, it’s a very director-heavy medium—moreso than any other genre i can think of, because the director has to be involved in the planning, the design, the shooting is painstaking … and the editing room, with all the CGI it’s like you’re starting a whole new movie,” he explained. “It’s a two-year process to direct one of these films, and you have to land on that date, whatever that summer date might be.”

The director went on to talk to MTV about the producers of the upcoming CBM and the star Robert Downey Jr.

“When I spoke to [Downey Jr.], it was definitely something he was interested in. I saw him briefly before he went away to shoot ‘Due Date,’” said Favreau. “I just started talking to [Steven] Spielberg and Ron Howard and [Alex] Kurtzman and [Roberto] Orci. It’s a really great bunch of producers and writers, and it’s already a great script. It’s nice to have a piece of material this far out.”

So Favreau isn’t the director as of right now but could possibly take the spot depending on how things work out. We already know he’s not directing Avengers but will produce. If he’s got something during Cowboys & Aliens, he might have to produce this project as well.

Favreau goes on to say what brings his attention to Cowboys & Aliens and how he would do it if he were directing.

“I love the idea of a mash-up of genres. I love the western, which isn’t something you don’t often get the chance to do these days,” he said. “If you’re going to mash up genres, you have to do it right. The idea of a western mixed with an alien movie, all of a sudden it makes it a fresh concept—and that mixture seems to make it very appealing and marketable.”

Jon goes on to say that there’s all types of westerns and he thinks this project feels more like “Butch Cassidy” rather than “Maverick”, “Wild Wild West”, or “Deadwood”.

If Favreau can’t work out the schedule, who would you want directing? Share your thoughts and ideas with us in the comments.
