‘Green Lantern’ Won’t Film in Australia

By Landfill | October 16, 2009

australiaIt was more or less a rumor a few weeks ago when we told you Green Lantern would be moving from Australia to Mexico, possibly New Orleans to start filming. Today it becomes official, Green Lantern will not be filming in Australia but looks to Canada or Mexico for replacement locations.

Warner Bros states, “The current global economic situation, including fluctuations in currency valuation and overall costs,” forced the decision.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Australian currency hit an all time high against the American Dollar closing at $0.95. It is a 30% decrease in value for the greenback since the shoot was announced six months ago, and which would reportedly add over $20 million in cost to the production.

“After working closely with our partners at the NSW Film and Television Office (Screen NSW) and examining every scenario, we have decided to move the production of ‘Green Lantern.’ We are extremely grateful for the assistance we have received from the NSW Government, Fox Studios and the NSW filmmaking community,” the studio said.

A few weeks ago Ryan Reynolds said filming will start in about 4 months. It wouldn’t be a good thing to halt production but they do need a shooting location in order to make the movie. Worst case scenario, Green Lantern’s release date could be changed once again.
