‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Producers Talk Early Development/Favreau’s Involvement
By Landfill | October 10, 2009
The last time we reported on Cowboys & Aliens we told you Jon Favreau would direct and Robert Downey Jr. would star. Today producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci update the project and speak on Favreau’s involvement.
Kurtzman said, “It’s the greatest,” when speaking about working with the esteemed director. Roberto Orci said, “We just started and we’re getting along really well. We’ve sent ourselves back to school and we’re watching Westerns together and analyzing them. We’re just getting into it.”
Sara Wayland from Collider reported that the screenwriting team just watched The Searchers, and it seems like a good reference to go with on the film.
“We had a lot of these Westerns in our head, but Jon is an incredible fountain of Western knowledge,” said Alex.
Robeto Orci goes on to say the recent Star Trek film was originally conceived by the duo as a space western so Cowboys & Aliens was another step in that direction.
Kurtzman goes on to say, “I think Jon also comes from a very similar emotional place and, because he’s an actor, he knows what plays and what doesn’t play very quickly. We’re having an unbelievably good time working with him.”
Sounds like every thing’s going good so far. I’d say it’s about time western films start to make a resurgence since Zombies, Werewolves, and Vampires have recently this past decade. I realize they’re different characters in a different genre but they are proof some things never really stay dead. If Jonah Hex can do well at the Box Office next year and Cowboys & Aliens doesn’t disappoint, expect more western next decade.
