Brian Bendis Talks ‘Thor’ & ‘Avengers’

By Landfill | October 8, 2009

Avengers & thorComic Book writer Brian Bendis recently shared with G4 some information pertaining to upcoming CBMs from Marvel Studios. Those two projects were Thor, due to release in 2011, and The Avengers with a 2012 expected release. Bendis shared a few details about the creative committee meeting dealing with the two projects. The committee consisted of Joe Quesada, Dan Buckley, Dan Buckley and Kevin Feige who talked about The eventual Avengers film.

“That was probably the most fun I’ve had,” exclaimed Bendis. “We had a really good time talking about the characters and how they’ll interact and who the villain is… and what the point of it is. It’s way cool. I can’t even believe it.”

The comic book writer went on to talk about the widely reported “Pitch” that Kenneth Branagh brought to Marvel and that it could possibly be one of Marvel’s highest grossing films.

“’Thor’ is an extravaganza,” said Bendis. “The artwork is unbelievable… They flew us all here because Kenneth Branagh wanted to tell us his ‘Thor’ movie and he pitched it live. It was Shakespearean and went on for hours.”

“He wasn’t high selling it,” continued Bendis. “He is an actor and he just sold it. I looked to Joe [Quesada] and went ‘Isn’t this fun?’ When he was done, we were like ‘Great! You should do that!’”

I don’t know about you guys but I’ve heard of Branagh’s pitch which is what everyone has been talking about. It was the reason Branagh will be directing Thor. I’ve heard he went into great detail about Thor that had some of the Marvel guys wondering when that happened during Thor’s early years of publication.

It’s nice to hear that they have visual artwork for the film, I would definitely love to see something soon to give us an idea as to how they’re going to portray the Asgardian God.

Not much news for Avengers I know but we are a step further to seeing a live action film with Thor getting great buzz. I hope Bendis is right about Thor since The Avengers can’t stand to lose another big component of their team.

i don’t know about you, but if the guy who wrote The Ultimates 1 & 2 is happy, then i’m very happy!!!!

Just as long as he’s not happy because they’re going totally with the “Ultimate” (meaning crap) stories and character designs. I swear to Odin that if they use the Ultimate Thor, I will bring Ragnarok down upon their blasphemous heads.

    @ DZ
I know you’re a fan of Thor so I would really like to hear what you have to say about everything Thor related. So you definitely want it based on the classic Thor, not Ultimates right? What if they modernized Thor but with a few of the Ultimate elements?

With Branagh attached to direct, I think we’re going to see class Thor anyway but I think he needs an updating.

I will be honest; I haven’t read an Ultimate Thor comic. However, from what I’ve seen and heard, I don’t like it at all.

    – Mjolnir: Thor’s hammer is as central to him as Spidey’s suit or Cap’s shield. It is essential they use the classic hammer (modernized, slightly) and not the hybrid hammer/axe overcompensating piece of crap that I’ve seen the “Ultimate” version using. Seriously. I think I’d walk out if he’s using it.

    – Did I read something about the “Ultimate” version working for Greenpeace and being an environmental crusader? What!? Thor is not some panzy activist. He’s a warrior-born, the son of Asgard, Protector of Man, Slayer of Giants, and heir to the throne of Asgard. Not an activist. This element should be avoided at all costs.

I can understand some changes to his outfit. The high-knee boots and winged helmet may be too much on film. Give him some chain mail, an appropriately colored tabard, his belt of strength, a red cape, and maybe a stylized version of his helmet.

My biggest suggestion would be to advise anyone that is looking to “modernize” Thor’s look, please look to the past and the actual Norse myth of Thor. Though, keep the blond hair (this is the comic version, after all).

We should be more respectful, if we don’t like something, it doesn’t mean is bad.

For me, The Ultimates 1 & 2 are amongst the best stuff MARVEL have made in either universe in the recent years.

But is a matter of taste and everyone is entitled of an opinion with respect.

That’s true Maraf but one could make the argument that everyone has an opinion and a version of their favorite character. Ang Lee liked Hulk and made a film about it. It’s good in it’s own right and has some high points but isn’t the story the fans wanted to see. Marvel’s all about making movies based on their characters that fans love.

Whatever direction they go with Thor we have to deal with but from a Thor fan, DZ has a point, if they make it about wordly affairs, it won’t cut it as a character who is a God of Thunder.

    @maraf

Relax, I wasn’t being disrespectful to you. If you like the Ultimates, that’s your choice.

I have an opinion and I feel strongly about it. I will attack and defame the Ultimates books whenever and however possible. However, I would not attack you or anyone else around here unless I were defending myself.

Respect my fellow posters, absolutely. Respect feeble ideas for comic books and the total destruction of fantastic characters under the banner of “mondernization”, no way in Hell.

The thing is that some words are sometimes too strong, but sure it’s ok to defend what we like with passion.

One of the major problems with the first Hulk was the origin story. I don’t remember exactly if in the normal universe that origin is accurate but I highly doubt it, the father of Bruce having such a strong influence in the creation process of The Hulk and later him becoming Absorbing Man was just too awful and it didn’t work, besides all the little things that didn’t make the film work either.

Then take a look at Incredible Hulk, and origin like in The Ultimates, they didn’t have the original idea but they make a good use of it.

Everything is connected, a few of the more brilliant minds were working directly or indirectly in the Weapon program, a program to create super soldiers to protect the freedom, liberty and democracy of the american people. That gave birth to The Hulk, Ant Man and The Wasp.

So the take of The Ultimates is more real and accurate with the “real” world and the modern era. The fact that Tony Stark decide to give away his secret identity and not use the bodyguard stuff is just an example of that. So is the take with Thor, look at the way heroes of mythology behave and try to imaging in our society, who fit in that role, and you see the take on Thor is really good. The hammer/axe bit bothers me too so I agree there.

Anyway, the greatest example I could give to show that the influence of The Ultimates is good hence they are good, is the results with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, they have the perfect mix between the regular lore and the lore from the Ultimate Universe and that is the winning formula so far, so no need to change it.

I’ll just agree to disagree. Too much of an Ultimates influence would be a bad thing, in my opinion. But, that’s just me. Maybe.
