Brett Ratner Talks About X-men Fans

By Landfill | October 15, 2009

Ever wonder what the filmmakers have to say about their movies that lack in quality, you know, like Brett Ratner or Joel Shumacher? Well, Brett Ratner hears all the comments about his X-men movie and I don’t think he likes it too much when people say things about how he ruined the film franchise. Today we bring you a few quotes from the director talking about fan’s reaction to his CBM.

“You can’t make these people happy. I’m kind of the anti-Christ to these comic book geeks. Every single person that wrote shit went to see that movie multiple times because a movie doesn’t gross $200 something million unless people go to see it more than once.”

“Every single person who said, ‘I’m never seeing that movie’, they were the first ones there. What are they concerned about? It’s out of the filmmaker’s hands. A film is a collaborative effort. How’s a person sitting at home going to worry about how a movie is going to turn out to be?”

Ratner goes on to say if anything, he kept the franchise alive and was the only director willing to step up and continue the franchise after Bryan Singer’s departure. “The most ridiculous statement I’ve read is – and of course I looked at the internet after the movie came out – that I buried the franchise.”

“If I buried the franchise how the fuck did they make a Wolverine? I mean, that’s ridiculous. And they’re making three other fucking X-Men movies. Mine kept the franchise alive!”

It’s true, X3 made tons of money and it’s true that it is responsible for spawning more X-men related films. It’s also true that X3 lacked quality and didn’t deliver like a good film should. It definitely does have some high points but it was a big letdown after X2.

Ratner’s been very vocal about people saying his movie sucked. I think he should deserve some credit for making the movie but it didn’t have to be made terribly. I think it would be best for Ratner to stay away from CBMs if he can’t handle criticism.

Every film ever made has critics and the filmmakers have to take it because they made it. Most directors don’t surf the internet looking for negative comments about their films. If they think it’s good, they shouldn’t be so insecure about their films. Ratner must have known his X-men film wasn’t going to please a few people.

Ratner has said in the past that he would like to make another X-film but I don’t think anyone would want him back. Not because of X3, because he doesn’t want to hear the negativity surrounding his take on the Marvel characters, and it would probably interfere with his film making abilities. In other words, he might intentionally ruin the next comic book related film on purpose.

Ratner needs to stick to what he knows best, making Rush Hour films with Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. He needs to leave the comic book characters alone indefinitely.

Jeeze, Ratner… to quote Ah-nold, “Stop whining!”. Admit it. You screwed up the series. Totally destroyed one of the best storylines in comic book history. Don’t get all defensive. Just say “I’m sorry”. Oh, and never touch another Marvel product again. Thanks.

I have never seen a director cry so much over what the public thinks the bottom line is yes you screwed up not only one of the best story lines in comic book history but the greatest x men story of all time and to say your movie inspired future movies well with a movie that bad they need to make something else and not leave the x men series in total darkness thank god for Hugh Jackman wanting to make a wolverine spin off.
Just admit you screwed up and to say fans saw the movie twice that is bullshit I would have rather paid to see Ang lee’s hulk movie before i paid to see Rattners version of X 3 at least Lee’s version of hulk was original in some aspect and the kept curious where the movie was going. I will say I did waste 5 bucks at wal mart to buy X3 but only to have it in my collection but to this day it remains in the wrapper unopened and unwatched and will never be watched. Maybe in the next film they start it off with Jean Gray waking up in a cold sweat telling Cyclops that she had a real bad dream erasing any memory of the 3rd film but I am sure Rattner would not like that that either but then again who care’s what he thinks as Mr. Stan Lee would state its all about the fans and if you can’t deliver what the fans want then put the comic book fils back on the shelf until it will be done right . And as for Rattner’s comment that he was the only one that was willing to do the movie that is bullshit that is like saying he was the only director in the world bottom line it was offered to him and he took it if he said no I am sure they would of found someone so stop your bullshit Ratttner.

Ratner has been taking heat for his film ever since the scene leaked where Cyclops “dies.” Then, when everyone heard Jean Grey was going to die and that there was another unknown “death” everyone flew off the handle. I remember reading about the deaths on this website and thinking to myself that it sounded like the film was attempting to end the series. I mean, if you’re planning on continuing a storyline, you don’t kill everyone. That’s just common sense.

So, it’s questionable as to why Ratner thinks he saved a franchise that he so obviously was working towards ending.

Also, referring to yourself as the “anti-Christ to these comic book geeks” shows how far away Ratner is from being tied into the characters and their universe…and also what a huge douche bag he is.

Finally, I would like to make a broader statement to all those involved in making CBMs:

You are not making a kid’s movie. Actors should not play down their characters thinking that the majority of the audience is unable to buy cigarettes.

You are not making a film for an un-pleasable mass of geeks. You are making a film for an educated group of people that don’t particularly care to watch absolute garbage. To please this group, you simply need to make a film that is as beautifully artistic as its source material. I’m not saying that’s an easy task, but it surely isn’t impossible. I think Sam Raimi and Jon Favreau are excellent examples of that.

You are not the bane of our existence. Truthfully, once you fail, that’s what we expect you to do. It’s important that you realize what you’re making is not a throw away film with a built-in audience. CBGeeks demand quality. So, when you’re making a CBM, make it well with knowledge of the source material, or don’t make it at all.

    Thank you.

    @Landfill

I love the picture you selected. I don’t think there’s another shot out there that could make him look more crazy.

Thanks Bedlam, that’s exactly what I was going for.

I appreciate all your comments because it needs to be said. He thinks he made a good movie and he’s totally wrong. I wanted to like it but it just didn’t feel like the first two. It would have been nice to hear him say he was sorry he didn’t get the characters or he realized he wasn’t making a good movie, something like that. We know now he’s not going to say that because in his mind he’s made a great movie.

From my X-Men post on the forums:

I’d rather some one just wake up and have it all have been a dream. Reboot it and do the Dark Phoenix Sage right or don’t do it at all. My suggestion is to reboot it and start fresh (with Jackman and Stewart returning. Replace everyone else):

Movie 1: X-Men vs Hellfire Club or Magneto and his Evil Mutants.
    Movie 2: Dark Phoenix.
Movie 3: Apocalypse and the 4 horsemen or the Shi’ar Imperial Guard and the trial of Jean Grey for actions performed during her Dark Phoenix days. End it with her death.

And done. Then, if there is interest and money, continue with another trilogy arch, possibly including the Days of the Future Past storyline…

Movie 4: Recovery from Apocalypse (if used and introduction of additional X-Men), Sentinels and Morlocks. Or just Sentinels and that island they take mutants to (can’t remember the name, dammit). Ends with the X-Men traveling to the alternate future.
Movie 5: All Future Past stuff.
Movie 6: Climax of Future Past, return to do battle against Nimrod.

And done again. Rinse, repeat doing a trilogy based on Cable, Bishop, and some of the “newer” X-Men characters. Perhaps with Magneto as the leader. I dunno, this is all just off the top of my head. At 1:11 in the morning. After a Battlestar Galactica marathon (the last 5 episodes – girlfriend hadn’t seen it, so we watched the whole series). C’mon, Hollywood, THINK! Or HIRE ME!

Edit: Next trilogy could center on Apocalypse (if not used previously) and/or Sinister.

It’s ovious that ratner was A fan of the cartoon not the comic. Last stan was tolerable but to give the pheonix saga justice it would of have to been split up into 2 movies without ratner! The Directors of CBMs need to collaborate with creators & writers. Or be a collecting fan of the material thier working on. Bryan singer is a boy scout if gets rights to another marvel character. It can’t be one of thier darker characters. He can reboot F4.
