Brain Blessed or Anthony Hopkins as Odin?

By Landfill | October 30, 2009

OdinEarlier today we told you Anthony Hopkins was the latest star to be added to the massive casting rumors surrounding Marvel’s upcoming CBM, Thor. If you remember back in June of this year, we told you Brian Blessed was to father the God of Thunder. The previous Odin news came from Bleeding Cool and today they talk about their article from a few months back.

When Bleeding Cool heard the news from today involving Anthony Hopkins, they ran an article clarifying the previous Odin casting for Thor. In their latest article they say Brian Blessed was their source and he’d been telling everyone he was to play Odin for Kenneth Branagh’s Thor.

Blessed has worked with Branagh in the past on Hamlet and As you like it, so it was plausible for him to work with the director again. Plus, Blessed actually looks like Odin from the Marvel comics. It was a good fit.

Back to Bleeding Cool, today said they might have misquoted Blessed and think he still has a role in Thor but not Odin. They point to another character, Volstagg of The Warriors Three (Pictured below).

This news is also possible since Blessed looks alot like that character as well. If The Warriors Three are to be in Thor, I’m thinking they would rather have some younger guys playing the three. Blessed is 72 years old by the way.

If Blessed isn’t Odin and isn’t Volstagg, I’m seriously thinking they might use him for his voice. He’s known for his booming voice and that was the main reason why there were no complaints with the previous Odin casting news. Its a perfect fit and everyone wins in this scenario.

I’m definitely not saying Anthony Hopkins has what it takes to play Odin but this news seems to come out of nowhere especially since Blessed was the guy to play Odin. Maybe something came up or they decided to go a different route with Hopkins. Anythings possible at this point so keep checking back for more Thor updates.

Anthony Hopkins no doubt about it. He is a better fit and help the film in every way. Providing more star power, will attract more people to the theaters, and is an incredible actor, with all due respect Brian Blessed just have his voice in favor and is not like the voice of Hopkins is bad, so not even a great lost.

The performance of Hopkins in Meet Joe Black is amazing and I thought about it immediately, it is good, it shows a lot of wisdom and great demeanor and could fit pretty well with the necessary adjustments to apply to an Asgard setting.

They should do the ultimate thor style..it is more plausible in the real world and the costume looks better.

In ultimate thor, Odin is represented in voice only too so they couls save a bit of money in not casting hopkins and getting blessed to use his voice..

I like Blessed best. No disrespect to Hopkins but The All Fatrher is a wise looking, rotund and booming voiced God of Gods. Hopkins is a great character actor but I just don’t see him booming out orders or looking regal and god like. I see Sir Anthony as more of a Heimdall
the guardian of the gods and of the link between Midgard and Asgard.
    But hey…that’s just me
