The Hollywood Reporter and Variety have both broken news that Anthony Hopkins has been cast as the Norse God Odin in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, which starts filming in January 2010. For those unfamiliar with the family tree, Odin is Thor’s father.

The “official” plot synopsis goes like this:
The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor’s reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

The film is schedule for a May 20, 2011 release.

Yes, I really liked Brian Blessed but I guess they’re going in another direction. It seems as though Thor wasn’t getting enough star power to help this film out. I understand we don’t care about those things but you do want to attract some other kind of audience other than fan. I think that’s where Hopkins comes into play.
