‘Doc Savage’ Nabs Producers and a Writer

By Landfill | October 25, 2009

doc savageYou guys heard of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman? I think they’re the guys who updated Star Trek and Transformers recently along with trying to bring Cowboys & Aliens to the big screen. While there not making every possible film, there making more fims, like producing Doc Savage.

You might have heard of Shane Black, he’s the guy responsible for writing a few action films like Lethal Weapon, Lethal Weapon 2, Last Action Hero, and more recently, he’s directed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang starring Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. Turns out he’s the guy writing Doc Savage.

Recently Black spoke with Harry Knowles from Ain’t It Cool News and said he’s got the job with Kurtzman and Orci producing.

When asked if Savage would be modernized, Black told Knowles it would stay faithful to Lester Dent’s work. It would take place in the 30s, “He needs his Fabulous Five,” Black said.

You may remember in 1975 there was a Doc Savage film that came about directed by George Pal. The film flopped and was negatively received by almost everyone. The tone was campy and the acting was terrible.

More recently, Arnold Scharzenegger was pegged for the role of Doc Savage but the project was shelved after the actor ran for governor.

Let’s hope Shane Black can put a good spin on the character because the only thing I can relate this to right now is Indiana Jones and we’ve seen him struggle recently.
