Another ‘300′ Movie?

By Landfill | October 17, 2009

300It seems as though we might or might not be getting a sequel/prequel to 2007’s Box Office surprise, 300. The CBM was based off a graphic novel by Frank Miller. A big reason why they want to make another one is because it was cheap to make and made tons of money. Continue with this article to see the latest updates for another movie.

According to IESB, Snyder is waiting on Miller to wrap up work on an all-new graphic novel that the follow-up to “300” will be based on, noting that he will wait until the book is completed before he commences work with Miller on a script to the film. Furthermore, the basic storyline of the follow-up has been discussed between the two creators, which will most likely bridge the gap between the Battles of Thermopylae and Plataea. Snyder also added that he’d definitely want to direct the “300” sequel, and is anxiously anticipating Miller’s completion of the graphic novel.

In a Q & A with Superhero Hype, Frank Miller said he’s been working on a story that’s not a prequel. “It’s definitely a further story in the Greco-Persian Wars, and it involves some of the same characters but I’m not sure exactly how far along it’ll get.”

Back in January Zack Snyder was in an article for The New York Times. In that article he talked about potential sequels to Watchmen and 300.

“The way I would do it is if Frank [Miller] drew a graphic novel, it came out in the marketplace and people said, ‘That’s pretty cool,’” Snyder said.“The studio wants it to be, sit with Frank, come up with an idea, write a screenplay, maybe he’ll do a graphic novel based on the screenplay. I’m like, ‘Yeah, I want nothing to do with that.’”

Snyder said he feels as though graphic novel adaptations are different than regular novels.

“It would be like me going to [‘No Country for Old Men’ author] Cormac McCarthy and going, ‘I have an idea for a movie: You write a book and I’ll write a movie, and you can release it. You’ll win a Pulitzer, I’ll win an Oscar. It’ll be awesome,’” the director elaborated. “The attitude toward comic books, they show their hand a little bit. They would never say that about a real novelist, but they would about a comic book.”

A few months later in April, Snyder said he’d like to do the proposed sequel. “There’s something that happens in history between Leonidas dying at the Hot Gates and Platea,” Snyder said. “That’s a year that’s left out of the [original] movie. A lot happened.”

“Frank is definitely working on an idea,” Snyder explained. “If Frank comes up with a great idea and draws something cool, there’s no reason why we wouldn’t make another movie.”

“If Frank does something great then yes,” Snyder said, insisting he’s behind Miller’s irreverent idea, and can’t wait to read the follow-up graphic novel. “It’s on him now.”

As recenty as June, Snyder said, “I know for a fact that Frank [Miller] is writing right now,” Snyder told Superhero Hype. “[He's] drawing away and seems to be knee-deep in it. I think he’s going to head back to Greece again and do another reconnaissance.”

“Just from what [Miller] told me, it would be bigger as far as landscape and terrain,” the director said. “We’re going to see Athens and the Aegean and other places.”

“The tech we used for ‘300′ was not a revolution,” he explained. “[The sequel is] going to be the same way, but on crazier steroids,” when referring to technology changing but wanting to keep the same feel from the original film.

More recently, Gerard Butler updated the project with his involvement. He said he would do it again if he were asked but is unsure how real the project really is.

“I had an incredible time doing the first one, and I think that if the first one was a stand-alone, as a one-off, there’s no bad thing in that,” explained Butler. “But, you know, let’s see what it might bring forward with a second one.”

It’s understandable that they want another film and if Snyder and Miller are both back for another one, I’d defninitely watch it. I think it’s great Frank Miller is writing and drawing a new story just for the movie. I don’t know about you guys but this movie would be pretty awesome if they showed any of the battle at the end of the first film.

The only thing dumber than doing a sequel to 300 would be trying to do a sequel for Titanic.

    They all died.
    The ship sank.

    Part 2? Doesn’t work.

Now if they did the same style film for another part of history, that would be okay. But to call it a sequel ot 300 is rediculous.

Funny thing, they almost made a sequel to Titanic, I think it was supposed to have David Hasselhoff in it.

As for the style of 300, I think someone’s trying to retell the story of moses in the same style.

I think the 300 style needs to be in every biblical story, I mean something has to make them more interesting right?

Someone should mash up both of these ideas and have a Titanic sequel with 300 effects.

I’m with Darth Zeppelin on this one. Making a sequel to 300 or even the Watchmen for that matter would only weaken the stories. They had a great presence on the big screen but trying to milk money out of a poorly advised sequel is ridiculous.

I Agree with bedlamFlash..One off gems like that should be left alone while they arestill remembered for being great..make a bad sequel and it destroys the whole franchise..

I honestly don’t think it would destroy the franchise or cheapen the first film. Take a look at the first two Terminator films, they were great and had some bad sequels afterwords, I’m actually fond of the fourth one, but anyway, those two films are still great even though the franchise is struggling right now.
