Results: Who Should Play Captain America?

By Landfill | October 13, 2009

Jensen AcklesA few weeks ago we asked you to vote on who you would want cast as Steve Rogers aka Captain America. We heard your voice and it was loud. Over 550 of you voted for your favorite candidate and now we have a winner.

Jensen Ackles (Smallville, Supernatural) is the clear favorite among comic book movie fans. The poll was close for the first week but the second week saw him run away with this contest. He ended up with 14% of the votes followed by WWE wrestler John Cena with 9%. Like I said, it was very close and everyone obviously had their pick of who they wanted as Captain America.

Down below are the official ending numbers. The poll is still going only because we haven’t found a good topic to poll you guys on. Suggestions would be much appreciated.

Still not satisfied? Still want to express your anger as to why your candidate didn’t win? Let it out in the comments. Also, tell us what you think of the results.

Excellent choice. Maybe the director will actually listen to the voice of the fans, and cast ackles. If John Cena is ever given a role like Cap America, ill become a DC comics fan

I’m happy with the result, it wasn’t my pick but I’m a fan of his work, Supernatural is my favorite TV series and he is absolutely amazing.

And at least I’m happy too because another 11 crazy people voted for my pick, so I know I’m not alone and all that crazy lol.

Well, I’m not as big as everyone else. I still wish my pick made it, but he is better than 90% of the other picks.

    Hi!
Long time lurker, posting on this board for the first time.
Jensen Ackles as Captain America is the best choice.
Steve Rodgers was in his early 20s when he went through Operation: Rebirth. He was a fine arts student for one year before trying and initally failing to get into the military. This part needs to be filled by someone young (no actors over 40) not well known or it’d become “lets see the Brad Pitt movie where he plays a superhero” rather than a Captain America movie. An actor capable of pulling off all of Rogers’ qualities that made him the great leader, fighter and Patriot that he was (no wrestlers who can’t act). And this is from a non american poster, cap should be played by an american actor (no fake american accent)
The only person to fit all of these qualities on this list is Jensen Ackles. Most of the rest of these actors are at least decent, if not phenominal at what they do, but Ackles is young, he looks similar to Rodgers (blonde hair, 6′1″, a deep voice which gives him a little more command and balances out his pretty boy looks) and on Supernatural he has shown the ability to portray all of the qualities that made Rodgers Captain America.

I lurk a lot on other boards and many think Ackles is just another CW pretty actor who can’t act around the likes of RDJ and Ed Norton. I wonder (and this is a genuine question, not fangirl whining) if the people so convinced that he can’t pull this off have ever actually seen him act. My determining factor on what makes a man a good actor is not necessarily how attractive they are; although it certainly doesn’t hurt when they are nice looking, it’s the gravitas they bring to their acting and the depth of emotion they’re able to convey (certainly not the brooding melodrama that passes for most acting on television today). Don’t assume that just because he’s on the CW that he’s just a pretty face. He’s amazing on Supernatural. I’d recommend that people try watching him before dismissing him. Just a thought. There is no doubt in my mind that Jensen Ackles can pull this off. Hell, he can put most A-list actors to shame. This actor is Hollywood best kept secret.

    @ Frizbee

I’m not going to lie, I’ve never heard of the guy so I’ve never seen him act. Probably a good indication that I didn’t vote for him. If our readers think that he’s a good choice, I’ll definitely check him out to see how good of an actor he is.

Even thought we had this discussion on the other postings for Captain America casting, I think a foreign actor can play Steve Rogers, I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

I hear foreign actor’s American accent is better than an American’s. I have no idea how that’s possible but I wouldn’t have a problem either way.

    @ Landfill

I don’t think a foreign actor can play Cap. We differ in opinions and that’s cool :)

for any other superhero nationality is not an issue if the guy’s got the talent and can mask his accent. An Aussie can play Wolverine, a canadian. A Welshian can play Batman. but Captain AMERICA? I’m just saying for this specific role it’s a mistake not hiring an American or worse, casting someone who can barely hide his accent like Worthington.

In any case, just because Ackles won the fan-polls that means nothing in the real world. It’s unlikely that Ackles would be able to accept the role because of his heavy filming schedules. Still glad to know he’s the fans’ favorite.

If you are willing to check out his work may I suggest episode “What is and what should never be” from Supernatural season 2? one of my favorite episodes ever. Ackles really shines in that episode, or season 1 finale “Devil’s trap” with Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The later seasons are great too. You should definitely try “The End” Season 5 ep 4, he plays one of the most challenging roles for an actor.

I do agree that Ackles would be a good choice but he would have to be #2 on my list.
I still have high hopes for Justin Hartley from Smallville. After all Green Arrow is the second hero he’s played after Aquaman (which really I’m glad didn’t get picked up cause he does such a great job as GA)
He has all the attributes of Cap from build (see last weeks ep as he strutted around shirtless) the physical look (blonde hair, blue eyes) and is comfortable in front of a green screen as well as in a form fitting outfit and I agree it should be an American to play Captain America. I can’t see Matt Damon playing James Bond or Nathon Fillon as Captain Britian. Some rolls need to stay in place and not farmed out just because they are a hot property (remember Wild Wild West?)

    Again, from my forum post:

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned him before (I didn’t read the entire thread again), but what about Chris Pine (Capt. Kirk)?

    1. He looks the part. He’s White, blond-ish, has the jaw line, etc. See here.
    2. Born in America
    3. A recognizable name, but not a SUPER star (yet).

I think he could do it well.
