Edward Norton Talks Hulk Appearance in ‘The Avengers’

By Landfill | September 28, 2009

You may remember a few days ago we brought a few quotes from Edward Norton talking about how he’d like to have Hulk play the villain in the assembling Avengers film. He said it should happen and he looks forward to it but there was one more question he needed to answer, would he be playing Banner in The Avengers?

In an interview with MTV Norton said, “It’s purely a function of time, it’s always about just working things out on the schedule.”

“I get very busy. You have to deal with the demands of your moment,” he explained. “I tend to keep my head in the thing I’m doing and I don’t speculate or worry too much about what two or three blocks down the thing is going to be. I know all these things will reveal themselves and work themselves out.”

Sounds like it’s he doesn’t know exactly what direction Avengers will be taking. If they do decide to have Hulk busting up Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America, I’d be a happy watcher. If they decide to exclude Hulk and don’t explain what happened to him or why the newly assembled team isn’t going after a worldly threat, I’m going to be pissed.

Norton is signed on for sequels with Marvel Studios so they should definitely try to get him in there. I was so sure Marvel knew what they were doing when they said something along the lines of keeping the same actors in their respective roles, meaning Norton is Hulk, Downey Jr. is Iron Man. They’ve already recast Jim Rhodes with Don Cheadle so that standard’s out the window.

Lastly, Norton went on saying that he really enjoys the Marvel universe and how everything cross pollinates, or crosses paths. “Even when I was working on the ‘Incredible Hulk’ script, I tried to plug in the whole super-soldier serum thing from Captain America.”

I don’t know about you guys but Edward Norton was definitely a step up from Eric Bana. Incredible Hulk film was a step up from Ang Lee’s Hulk. Lee’s Hulk was watchable, it just wasn’t Marvel made. And by that, I mean it didn’t have that feel like Incredible Hulk and Iron Man had.

What do you guys think of Norton’s comments? Share your ideas of how Avengers should go in the commenting section.

Obviously, keeping Norton attached to the Banner character makes the most logical sense. He has the chops to do it and I think everyone would agree that changing actors at this point (meaning on the upturn of the Marvel movie-verse) would be a huge disappointment. As for my thoughts on the film, I think they are located about a week to a week and a half worth of articles back. Basically, Hulk should be the villain.

Yes the idea of having Hulk as the villain would be good. I’m not saying villain like a bad guy, just a big guy that’s misunderstood, a guy that can’t control his actions and goes after people trying to stop him. Good example was Incredible Hulk when he stopped the military teams each time.

I don’t think they would recast him but they might just have the Hulk and not Banner. I’ve heard the guy that plays Emil Blonsky/Abomination is signed on for more sequels but only as a voice actor or motion capture.

I think that MARVEL knows what they are doing, they have seen the feedback from the fans and it’s so positive that they should know what is working (Iron-Man , The Incredible Hulk) and what isn’t (everything else).

So I guess they will try their best to not recast. The thing with Don Cheadle is that I read it somewhere that they had the intention to cast him from the beginning, so that may be an excuse to cover it up or just the truth.

And the thing with The Hulk as the bad guy in The Avengers, I guess we all agree that is the way to go and we all have the first volume of The Ultimates to show us the way to do it.

I think the main reason with Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard is because Howard was one of the first cast in Iron Man, therefore he had the highest salary. When Marvel decided to do a sequel, they didn’t want to pay him so much this time around and his agent or whoever declined the initial offer. Marvel went to Cheadle because they might have already had him in mind.

Also, I hear Terrence Howard is kind of a prima donna and a pain in the ass to work with.
