‘Green Lantern’ to Film in Mexico?

By Landfill | September 30, 2009

MexicoWith Green Lantern revving up to start production soon, there’s been some news surrounding the upcoming CBM. We recently had a casting call for a few supporting characters and we already know Ryan Reynolds will play Hal Jordan. Today we’ll find out if they decide to shoot a few scenes in Mexico.

Originally the production crew were supposed to shoot in Australia because it was cheaper,  Wolverine did this exact same thing when they were shooting principle photography. The plan was foiled after something happened where Australia would cost way to much. After that, the project was move to the states, Louisiana was the lucky state.

So after being rumored to be shooting in Louisiana, the move now shifts to Mexico. According to Inside Film, the shift is likely since the tax breaks Warner Bros, were seeking with Australia would now cost an extra $20 million. It is understood that Warner Bros is continuing to pay Fox Studios Australia to hire its eight sound stages although there have been rumors that it may use the space to shoot another film.

The recent tax breaks have change the filming schedule for this November to early next year. If WB can’t find a place to shoot the film, it can’t get made. If the film doesn’t start production soon, say goodbye to the 2011 release date.

Also from Inside Film, “Green Lantern director Martin Campbell is also understood to have made substantial script amendments, which required a higher budget, placing further pressure on the production’s Australian base.”

The move to Mexico is likely going to happen because Australia’s booming currency is blowing out all costs and I guess the great state of Louisiana’s price for filming isn’t low enough either. I’m really hoping production starts soon for Green Lantern or we could possibly see something along the lines of another top DC Entertainment character’s trip to development hell, the Superman Lives project.
