Who Should Play Captain America?

By Landfill | September 24, 2009

captainamericaThe First Avenger: Captain America has a scheduled release date for July 22, 2011. Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park 3) is set to direct the upcoming CBM which will be a period piece. There is a script but no casting has happened yet. So, in this article we’ll discuss who should play Steve Rogers since the film’s getting closer to the date of release.

Not sure who the fan favorite is but I’ve heard most people throw around the names of Mark Walhberg and Brad Pitt. Two great actors if you ask me. I wouldn’t mind seeing either as Captain America.

Then there’s a few who want Alexander Skarsgard or Aaron Eckhart. Again two great actors who would make a good Captain America.

Joining the last two, MTV has three other actors some of you might not have thought of before. John Borrowman who plays a captain on Torchwood and reportedly wants the role. Nathan Fillion is another one from MTV but I think he’d make a better Green Lantern. Last but not least is Mark Valley from Fringe. He definitely has the look but not sure if he’s got the star potential just yet.

I’ve heard a few mention Jensen Ackles, he was recently in My Bloody Valentine 3D and appeared in season 4 of Smallville. Another would have to be Sam Worthington. He was recently seen in Terminator Salvation and will be in the upcoming James Cameron film Avatar.

And now to the picks that we haven’t mentioned on the main site but have had some heated discussions about on our Message Board. Dominic Purcell is a fan favorite among us along with Matt Damon from the Jason Bourne films. Matthew McConaughey was on the list, I didn’t make it, but some people think he’d make a good Captain America.

Deadpool creator Robert Liefeld has his pic in Jon Hamm from Mad Men. He tweets, “Jon Hamm should play Captain America, IMHO.” But later said, “Jon Hamm is probably too old for 3 Captain America films tho…shame….”

One other actor has had his name attached to The First Avenger: Captain America although he’s not really the type. Will Smith was reportedly offered the role at one point but he made it clear that it was just a rumor. Interesting note, he was offered the Superman role before he did Hancock but turned down The Man of Steel because he didn’t think the world was ready for a race-revamped Superman. He also turned down the role of Neo in The Matrix.

As for who I’d pick out of all 14 hopeful candidates, I think I’d have to go with Alexander Skarsgard because he’s already got the build for the part. he’s also a good actor, the movie wouldn’t suffer on that front. He’ was up for Thor until director Kenneth Branagh went with Chris Hemswoth. I also think Hemsworth would have made a fine choice for Captain America.

If I had to go with a second choice, it’d be Brad Pitt because he’s the name that’s always thrown around in this type of discussion. Plus, it’s already been proven numerous times he can act.

I’d like to know who you would want to play Steve Rogers and the comments section is a good place to put those suggestions. Anyone I might have missed? Tell me about it in the comments.

I’d rather see Hacksaw Jim Duggan smash Red Skull in the face with his 2×4.

OMG! with all due respect, more than half of that list don’t qualify for the role, it just don’t make sense at all!.

But hey, everyone is entitle to their opinion and I respect that.

Matthew McConaughey, for me could pull a great Thor.

Alexander Skarsgard, from True Blood, definitely have the build for a Captain America and even Thor, in which I prefer him more.

Jensen Ackles, from Supernatural btw ‘cuz those other roles don’t do him any justice, is a great actor, great shape but not for Cap, he could pull a Green Lantern easily.

Anyway, in my humble opinion, there is a perfect Steve Rogers out there, he have world class acting skill and with his shape in The Beach (yeah you know it) he can be the best Captain America hands down, Leonardo DiCaprio.

P.S.: Brad Pitt is a really close runner-up.

John Cena is NOT an actor, nor does he look anything like steve rogers.

Bratt Pit is TOO famous, plus his salary would decimate the movie budget!

I’ve seen The Departed so I know DiCaprio can act, but he is not right for Cap America.. we need someone who looks like a super soldier.

Actors who are sort of well-known but not crazy famous tend to work out the best I think.. I’m very surprising by the lack of ideas.

I’ve yet to come up with anyone who I’d be happy with; but I’m on it!

Matthew McConaughey would be perfect for Cap!
I’m telling you, seriously. He has the physique, the charisma and the talent.

Brad Pitt is my favourite actor. He also has the physique, the charisma and talent, but I think he is getting a little too old for this role.

Did anyone see Matt McConaughey in Reign of Fire?? Come on; put a Captain America suit on that man!

These are all horrible ideas. Brad Pitt doesn’t have the wholesome Americana aspect Captain America needs. Matthew McConaughey doesn’t have the acting ability to pull off the dramatic aspect without making it hokey. DiCaprio doesn’t have the proper face. What age are we looking at? Is Cap suppose to be a late 20’s early 30’s just thawed Super Soldier? If so, I think it would make sense to pull an unknown with the right acting chops. I don’t really know the guys from Supernatural, but I have a feeling they might translate to looking too young. I always think of Travis Schuldt (Scrubs) for a Cap character becuase he can look kind of dorky for the pre-serum moments, and still look like an All-American later. Again, I feel as though he would come across looking too young. It’s definitely a hot button issue.

I do like the idea of Dominic Purcell, if they can de-gruff him. I think Jay Soulless has a good point about picking someone without a lot of notoriety behind them. Let this be their launching point.

    What about Chris Pine?

Hmm, Chris Pine has the look I’d say

Oh and if you haven’t seen Matthew McConaughey in Frailty, do yourself a favour and check it out. Excellent movie.

TBH In my opinion Cena is the only one who really fits the physique of Cap and actually if he grew his hair a little he’d look exactly like Rogers.

Of course the point is as moot as having Tripple H play Thor. It’ll never happen.

I guess my second choice pick would be…….. Mat Damon :/ .

He’d have to put on a ton of muscle though (300 style), then he could make it work.

  12. bedlamFLASH Says:

Triple H as Thor? No, sir. Triple H as Conan the Barbarian and I’m on board because it would require the same acting level of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

No one likes Jon Hamm from Mad Men? I think he would definitely not look too young for Captain America. I think some of these guys have that problem but I think Sam Worthington and Hamm both look old enough for the part.

Chris Pine still looks like a 14 year old. I’d say he could play Bucky or a very scrawny pre-super soldier Steve Rodgers.

Absolutely no wrestlers in a Marvel film. Yes I know Triple H was in Blade 3 but do we really want him as Thor or Captain America?

We need a good actor for Captain America, someone who can play a hero to the bone and be convincing. Someone who can act according to the time of the film. Someone who will stick out after surviving decades in a block of ice.

First of all anybody who wants DiCrapio as a superhero is lame. That would be like Ben Affleck as Daredevil, yeah right. And second i agree with Landfill, no wrestlers in CBMs And i think Jon Hamm looks the part too. And Matthew McConaughy would have been my choice as well. He’s got a good physique already so iy wouldnt take much for him to bulk up and he is the prefect all around American so in my mind its a no brainer.

Hey there is nothing wrong with DiCaprio, with his look in the film, The Beach, he have the right build for the role, and I guess if someone really pay attention to the art leaving aside personal favoritism then he can see he is an amazing actor.

I see that many of you are expecting for a mature and a little bit older Cap, which is fine but not essential. Steve Rogers can look ‘normal’ or even a little young, especially since the film is about his beginning.

But anyway, everyone have their own taste and mine Leo is the right way to go hands down.

  16. Landfill Says:
    September 25th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

There’s nothing wrong with Leo, I’d be happy if he were cast but for some reason I don’t think he’d do it. I’m not set on McConaughy either just because I haven’t really watched any of his movies and he can’t ever get rid of that accent. I realize I can’t really say he should or shouldn’t be Cap because I’m not familiar with him but I gave my reasons why.

  17. That Fraggin Bastich Says:
    September 25th, 2009 at 8:42 pm

I agree that if an already established actor doesn’t immeadiately come to mind then the best bet is to go with someone less known but still has the acting chops to get the job done.

DiCaprio is a fantastic actor and has proven himself again and again but it’s true I don’t see him as Cap. The Departed, Gangs of New York, Basketball Diaries, Blood Diamond and even What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. The guy can act and that’s a fact.

    @maraf
If McConaughy could lose that accent I think he’d be more believable in more versatile roles. McConaughy as Thor? I don’t buy it. I think that would go something like this. “Well, by golly Loki I think we’all got caught up in a little misunderstanding here. Why don’t we head on back to Asgard, grab ourselves some brews and get a little bongo session going.”

  18. maraf Says:
    September 25th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

I agree, the accent of McConaughy is a bit of a problem. But I still like him as Thor, if Thor is portrayed like the Thor from The Ultimates, specially in The Ultimates 2, the guys is a rockstar and the team believe him as a delusional patient which powers are derived from a power tech belt. So the kind of goofy and humorous performance of Matthew fit well there and the guy can act too, but lately he just find campy comedy to do, but like HollowPoint said, watch him in Reign of Fire, he even look like Thor from the volume I mention above.

Matthew Fox. Too old? Maybe. But he has shown that he can pull off a leader (Lost) and he has shown he can wear a cowl (Speed Racer).

    He’s the perfect Cap.

Chris Pine. Teenie Bopper bullshit aside, everything he has been in he has pulled off fantastically. I think he’d make a superb Steve Rogers.

  21. Landfill Says:

I agree he has made some good things, his acting is top notch too. He just doesn’t have the look of Captain America. If it were possible for him to play Steve Rodgers pre super soldier serum, I wouldn’t have a problem.
