Todd McFarlane Updates ‘Spawn’
By Landfill | September 24, 2009
We recently reported that Todd McFarlane has started the screenplay for the next installment in the Spawn film franchise. This straight from his twitter account, “I’ve officially begun writing the ['Spawn' movie] screenplay. The story has been in my head for [seven or eight] years.”
Today we bring his latest update on the screenplay along with something special but you’ll have to continue with the article to find out what it is.
According to his recent tweet, McFarlane is a few pages in with the screenplay for the upcoming CBM. “Opening scene and two others scenes are now done for the SPAWN film screenplay. Finishing it along with other projects and books”
The last time we reported on Spawn, there was some confusion with McFarlane’s name drop of Leonardo Dicaprio. I can assure you he wasn’t talking about having DiCaprio as Spawn but as an unnamed character, possibly a detective investigating the mysterious Spawn.
The upcoming CBM won’t necessarily be a sequel but a stand alone film involving the character. McFarlane says, “The movie idea is neither a recap or continuation,” he described. “It is a stand alone story that will be R-rated. Creepy and scary … the tone of this ['Spawn'] movie will be for a more older audience. Like the film ['The Departed'].”
Great news because this is exactly what the first film was missing. The first film was ok but nothing like the source material. Furthermore, with what Todd is saying, it sounds like this will be more of his own take on his character instead of being watered down for the general audience, aka non-fans.
As for the surprise, the image below is from Todd McFarlane himself, “I haven’t told anyone yet, but I’m pencilling AND inking some pages in the latest SPAWN COMIC. Here is a two page spread. It isn’t done yet, but thought you’d like to see anyway. TODD”
What do you thin of the latest Spawn news? Are you fan of the characters? Tell us your thoughts on the upcoming CBM in the comments.

Maybe McFarlane should work on some new ideas instead of trying to squeeze the last couple miles out of his one trick pony. Spawn hit real big back in the 90’s because it was super edgy compared to everything else that was coming out at the time. Guess what, everything is edgy now and there are plenty of writers that do it better than McFarlane. Maybe I’m being a bit harsh but I think if you’re still a Spawn fan you probably also carry one of those nifty switchblade pocket combs in your 2 sizes too small leather jacket. Way to go Fonzie.

Wow, you really took it to the extreme with that comment. I mean saying liking Spawn is old school, even comparing it to the 50s style is a bit much.
Maybe McFarlane will surprise us with this, maybe it’s his masterpiece for all we know. And the one thing I’m really liking about this is that Spawn isn’t necessarily a main character. We’re pretty much getting the view of Sam and Twitch.

We never got a REAL Spawn film.. the way the first should have been. I can’t wait for the new one!

I think I’m the middle ground on this one.
@That Fraggin Bastich
Having a creator work in a new medium to bring about the true essence of a character is no small task. I don’t think it’s so much an attempt to “squeeze the last couple miles out of his one trick pony” as it is a desire to give a completely unique perspective on a character and his universe that was not given a true representation in the past. Furthermore, if you want to talk about old school, almost every other CBM out there is based on a book at least twice the age of the Spawn character if not more so. Spawn still has a very unique and youthful point-of-view that could strongly resonate in a market of still somewhat watered down characters and storylines.
To everyone else:
I wouldn’t get too excited about this particular venture. Finding the right actors, and more importantly, the right producers and directors will ultimately decide the fate of this story. No matter how in-depth McFarlane is in the project, it’s ultimately the decision of the producers and directors as to what makes it to the big screen. There are a lot of obstacles to overcome. Case in point: the first Spawn film.
I hope McFarlane’s vision can be completely realized.

I have to say, I’m not confident that this will ever happen. It seems like Tod’s mostly talk these days as this movie has been rumored for like 5 years now. I don’t know about everybody else, but I’d like to see some actual progress for a change.
On a lighter note I think it’s great to have Tod working on it himself. Some of the other companies could take a page from his book and do their characters justice….. *cough*DC*cough*!

The actual progress here is McFarlane has a few scenes done for the fim. I read recently that he wants to do the film on a smaller budget to keep it Rated R. If said that if he were to take it to a big producer, they’d want to have it at PG 13 instead of R.

Rated R is the way to go. At least he’s thinking about it wisely. But a smaller budget means less and less Spawn because of less CGI and more than likely no Leo.

Yeah, that’s been his idea for awhile now. Take the attention away from Spawn, have him lurking in the shadows doing good throughout the town as a vigilante, something like that.
It’s a good idea and if the project can come across as looking good, I’d definitely watch it. I mean District 9 cost $30 million, why can’t a Spawn movie look that good for the same price?

@Landfill
That’s a good point. But then again, there were no “names” in District 9 either, so it still begs the question of how to attach someone to carry the film without blowing up the budget.

You know, I’m thinking a good $70 million would be enough to make this film. It’s enough for stars and the quality of the film wouldn’t suffer. Inglourious Basterds was made for $70 million with alot of talent. If Spawn were to just cast Leonardo DiCaprio as the one big star it could be possible.
I think a good Spawn movie could kill at the Box Office, easily $100 million in the first few weeks.

David Fincher should direct this! This project needs to be darker grittier & creepy. R rated!!! Violator & clown should be portayed very disturbing. would Dicaprio be twitch?

Dicaprio would play a detective, not sure if he’d be Twithch or not.
Fincher is a good choice but this movie is trying to be a low budget picture, I think with Fincher’s addition, it could be turned into something bigger. If they could work it out and have him, I’d be happy.
