New ‘Ghost Rider’ Film in Development, Among Others

By Landfill | September 23, 2009

ghostrider-28You guys remember Ghost Rider, the film starring Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes? Came out in 2007? Well if you recall, the quality of the film wasn’t that great, you can thank Mark Steven Johnson for that, but in this strange world we live in, it’s been granted a second installment. Continue with the article for details on Ghost Rider and the other projects in development.

Variety is reporting that 2007s Ghost Rider is officially moving forward with David Goyer attached. David Goyer isn’t officially attached just yet but he wrote a treatment a few years before the 07 film went into production. They decided to go with Mark Steven Johnson’s script instead but now see the error in their ways and are using Goyer’s this time around.

You may remember that Goyer as the guy attached to everything CBM related including Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, X-Men Origins Magneto, Blade, Blade 2, and Blade Trinity. He’s got a decent resume when it comes to these types of films so it’s possible things are looking up for Johnny Blaze.

It’s not totally clear just yet if this will be a direct sequel or a reboot. Russ Fischer from /Film states, “From what we’ve heard before, I think it’ll split the difference between sequel and reboot. Sequel in the sense that it’ll be [Nicolas] Cage returning to play the character, reboot in the sense that all involved seem to be keen on ignoring as much of the first film as possible.”

And now on to the “others.” In the same Variety article, Fox is “Quietly developing a new version of ‘Daredevil‘ and working on a ‘Silver Surfer‘ film.”

Not much else is known but as I Stated in the past, expect Fox to start moving forward with the properties they already have exclusive rights to. If they decide to shelve a project and not use the Marvel characters, they could eventually lose the rights and we would see them revert back to Marvel. This is actually a good thing if you’re a fan of the way Fox handles the comic book characters they have.

    Im all for a new Ghost Rider movie and i like the fact that they are bringing Nicholas Cage back. Is Eva Mendes back as well? As for Daredevil, the movie was horrible. Ive said before that nobody sees Ben Affleck as a super hero and it was just a really corny movie. And the new one should be played by Nathan Fillion. And they need to make the bad guys cooler like a better Bullseye or Kingpin but maybe Mysterio. And a Silver Surfer movie would be awesome. It would be cool to see how he was created and how he rebels form Galactus and becomes the hero that he is.

    Yeah in order to do a Silver Surfer film like that, they’d have to show his home planet and show him sacrificing himself in order to save his world. That in itself would be the first film. Either that or do what Incredible Hulk did with it’s opening credits.

    To tell you the truth, I liked Daredevil more than Ghost Rider. I don’t know why but I did. I can say that Eva Mendes is an exception, and no I currently do not know if she’s coming back, but she was great in the film.

    The Ghost Rider movie was really dumb.. there was not a single even half decent fight scene in the whole thing and pretty much nothing good about the movie.. It tried for humor and failed, main bad guy got owned by a single shot gun and didnt see the soul stare crap coming aaand at one point the previous cursed guy turns into the Rider one last time just to show nick cage where to go.. couldnt he have just bought a GPS, wtf!?

    Daredevil? HHAHAAHHAAHAHAHAHAH Still one of the worsr movies ever. And then they gave Elektra her own ridiculous spin off haha.. good luck fixing that pile of shit too!

    I agree with Landfill. As far as movies go, Daredevil was better. I’m not trying to pretend it was good, just better than the Ghost Rider film.

    As far as the Ghost Rider near reboot is concerned, it’s obvious that they need to spend more time on the philosophical tormented soul aspect and more of the darkness of the Ghost Rider character. I thought I was watching a movie about the world’s worst/scariest clown when I sat through Ghost Rider. Pitiful.

    Now for Daredevil. Looking back, the movie did get a lot of things right, but spent too long building up the background of characters and focusing on their human characteristics more so than their super-human ones. I mean, seriously, who wants to see a Daredevil movie to watch him got to charity fundraisers and win pro-bono cases for the poor? Not me. That’s weak. I think the Daredevil film is a good example of taking something good and watering it down for the mass audience. That’s flawed logic, though, because then you end up with a film no one wants to watch.

    Silver Surfer = origin story and we’re done. Seriously.

    By the way, we can thank Mark Steven Johnson for giving us the film version of Daredevil and Ghost Rider. He attempted to adapt Preacher for TV through HBO but they could tell he had no idea how to make something good.

    I wouldn’t mind seeing a reboot of both films, the type that just accept that the origin story has been told and start from there with a semi-new take. Good example, Incredible Hulk from 2008.

    Hmm, Y’know I didn’t hate either of those movies. I think Daredevil was a nice try. Bullseye could have used a more traditional look like his CB counterpart. Ghost Rider was also not bad but at least the origin story is out of the way so maybe now they can spend more time on the hero/villain aspect.

    Silver Surfer could be a great movie if 1) they do Galactus right this time (as in not like they did him in F4:2) and 2) Spent as little time as possible on his origin and just get right to the meat of story (Incredible Hulk Style).

    @Boss Jr.
    Little origin!?! That’s what creates the whole drive of the character. That’s what makes him such an amazing hero…that his most heroic moment came before he had any powers. I’m speechless. Without the origin, Silver Surfer comes across as a vapid vagabond in outer space. I’m on the complete other side of the fence on this one.

    @Landfill
    “He attempted to adapt Preacher for TV through HBO but they could tell he had no idea how to make something good.” Yeah, I loled in my office and got some stares. Good call.
