Sam Mendes Updates ‘Preacher’

By Landfill | September 14, 2009

PreacherPreacher is one of those types of projects that can’t stay dead for long. It’s been a tough road for Preacher, it’s been almost ten years since Garth Ennis sold the rights to Electric Entertainment to try to get a film version going. Back in 2002, production almost started, James Marsden (X-men, Superman Returns) was cast in the lead but that deal eventually didn’t happen. Preacher almost made the jump to television in 2006 through HBO while Mark Steven Johnson (Daredevil, Ghost Rider) was running things. That deal eventually didn’t happen either and now were at the current status with Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road) attached to the project.

Back in 2008 Columbia bought the rights to the film version of Preacher and Sam Mendes is currently attached to direct. Under the new direction, John August was brought on to write the script back in January.

Mendes recently said in an interview with Empire Online that August’s script is very good. “It’s getting closer,” said Mendes about the script.

If some of you are worried Mendes won’t deliver with Preacher, rest assured, he’s a big fan of the source material. “I love graphic novels – Road To Perdition was based on a graphic novel – so I’m used to that form and Preacher is absolutely brilliant. I certainly feel it’s a movie.”

“It’s funny, it’s violent as hell, it’s extremely blasphemous and profane, but it has an amazingly skillful tone,” says Mendes. “I met Garth Ennis and I’m just a huge fan of it.”

Sounds like the scripting of the film is going quite well and Mendes seems like he’s got feelings for the characters. I just hope this time Preacher doesn’t get stuck in Development Hell and we eventually see something happen with all the pre-production.

sam mendes is the worst thing that could happen to preacher, his adaptation of road to perdition turned a excellent gangster story with gunfights and extreme violence into a boring film with the same title

I’d have to say that I wouldn’t pick Mendes first for Preacher and I think it would work better as a TV series. I like what Mendes does but not sure what to make of this news. I think I’m going to wait to see if this actually gets made since it’s been developing forever now.
