Superman to Marvel, Is It Possible?

By Landfill | September 13, 2009

superman Spider-man marvelWe’ve reported in the past about Superman’s legal battles and how the families of the creators are seeking the full rights to the character. This article will not be about that but more in theory as to where the “The Man of Steel” will go if and when the rights revert back to the families.

The legal battle has been going on for decades and it’s just starting to turn tide. The Shuster and Siegel families will gain the original rights to Superman, and if they choose to, they can sign him with Marvel.

I’d like to add that this version that the family is seeking isn’t the one we know today. It isn’t the one in the image at the top of this article. It’s more or less the version that was originally created that could not fly, didn’t have heat or x-ray vision, super breath, or super hearing. This version would only be able to lift a car over his head, run faster than a speeding bullet, leap one-eighth of a mile to clear tall buildings in a single bound, and have incredibly tough skin that can only be pierced by something stronger than an artillery shell.

It’s true that WB/DC own the rights to the term Kryptonite so Superman loses his weakness if he were to make the jump to Disney/Marvel. They also own the rights to Lex Luthor and Jimmy Olsen so he’d have to find a new archenemy and a new best friend.

That being said, does Disney/Marvel really need another character of that magnitude? The short answer is yes. The reason why is because everyone in the world would know this character and Disney knows how to milk a character for all they’re worth. Plus who wouldn’t love the fact that Superman gets to hang with any Marvel character? And if Marvel were able to produce a live action film, it would be phenomenal in my opinion since they know quality is way better than quantity. I’m not saying I didn’t like the most recent effort, I actually loved Superman Returns, but to see Marvel’s take on the “Man of Tomorrow” would be something great.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and since Marvel finally has the financial backing of Disney, this deal would very well be possible. I’d have to add that it would be possible to make him fly again, all they would have to do is explain the ability as a mind thing, AKA telekinesis.

It’s still possible for WB/DC to regain the rights and keep everything as is so don’t worry if you think the original character will be going anywhere. I think they will most likely come to terms to keep things as they are because truthfully, I can’t imagine DC Entertainment without Superman. I agree though that it would be very cool to see him at Marvel, with a different suit, different weaknesses, and different enemies.

I’d like to add that I found most of the facts at The Geek Files, Screen Rant, and Variety. Oh and please tell me if the facts aren’t correct because I tried to make this as errorless as possible.

I’d really like to know what you, the readers, think about this so have your say in the comments.

I dont think Marvel should persue this. Superman is and always has been D.C. even if it is the original Superman its still not as cool as the modern version. Marvel should just leave it alone. Dont get me wrong, I love Marvel and i think their superheroes are much better than D.C.’s I just dont think they need it.

One thing I didn’t add to the article was that Marvel has tons of characters now just as powerful as the original creation of Superman.

And I agree Marvel doesn’t need Superman but it is once in a lifetime and what would be better than to take your rivals top guy?

I like both of the companies and their characters but this would be a great change if it happened.

I couldn’t handle such a thing. It just doesn’t seem like it would be good for anyone. Unless Marvel gave Superman a whole new universe to deal with. Then, it might be okay, but still really weird.

i agree – i would find it really weird to see Superman in a Marvel universe – even if they change it up and give him different villians to face and different powers – it would be very strange and “out of place”. I don’t think this is a good idea… for anyone.
