February 5, 2007: Joss Whedon has announced on his official Blog that he will no longer be writing and directing the Wonder Woman movie at Warner Bros. Pictures.: Joss Whedon says: “You (hopefully) heard it here first: I’m no longer slated to make Wonder Woman. What? But how? My chest… so tight! Okay, stay calm and I’ll explain as best I can. It’s pretty complicated, so bear with me. I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated. Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that’s never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don’t think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim a little bit, but others may have differing views. The worst thing that can happen in this scenario is that the studio just keeps hammering out changes and the writer falls into a horrible limbo of development. These guys had the clarity and grace to skip that part. So I’m a free man.” Click here to read more. In Related news, Warner Bros. Pictures and Silver Pictures are quietly in the process of buying a Wonder Woman spec script from newcomers Matthew Jennison and Brent Strickland, says The Hollywood Reporter. The studio and producer Joel Silver have been developing a big-screen version of the DC Comics superhero. The trade says the purchase is a pre-emptive measure aimed at taking the script off the market to protect itself against the possibility that any similarities between the scripts could be fodder for future legal action. It is understood that the Jennison-Strickland script is set against the backdrop of World War II, while Joss Whedon’s script was set in the present day. Silver has no interest in making a period Wonder Woman, however. But as the spec script made the rounds, it landed at Silver Pictures, and executives there were impressed by Jennison and Strickland’s writing. ”
May 8, 2006: IF Magazine interviews Joss Whedon about Wonder Woman: “It’s sort of shifting under me,” says Whedon. “I’m doing more rewriting on this than I am used to. Finding her was fun, and finding the structure of the film was incredibly difficult and fun. I am not bringing in any villains that anyone knows. I will not be bringing in any of the rogues gallery from the comic book. The villain is original to the film.”
September 12, 2005: Australia’s ABC Radio National talked to Joss Whedon about his next project, the Wonder Woman movie: “We’ll meet a Wonder Woman who is similar to the one from the original comics and from the TV series to an extent,” said Whedon. “Neither of them are really a template. I’ve never loved the comics and I didn’t watch the television series, but I loved the character very much.” He added that “she doesn’t really understand this world, she’s very strong but she’s also very naive. She’s not quite as little as the girls I’m used to writing, but she’s definitely one of them in the sense of she’ll undergo that kind of baptism of fire that used to be relegated to the male gender. She’ll have to come into the world and see how corrupt it is and learn to deal with it and with her own powers. She is kind of, in a way, the grandma of everything I’ve been writing my whole life, so it makes sense that we should meet.” -Thanks to ‘Superherohype’ for the heads up and the interview clip!
March 17, 2005: Press Release: Silver Pictures, producer of the revolutionary, $3 billion-grossing Matrix franchise, has signed Joss Whedon, creator of the phenomenally popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series, to write and direct the feature film action adventure Wonder Woman based on the DC Comics character. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. “We are excited about working with Joss,” Robinov said. “He brings great energy and creativity to the process. His work on Buffy makes him uniquely qualified to handle the Wonder Woman character.” “There’s no one better than Joss to adapt the legendary Wonder Woman comic book character created in the 1940s into a dynamic feature film for 21st century audiences,” producer Joel Silver added. “Wonder Woman was the first great female superhero to emerge from comic books and later inspire millions of fans in her television incarnation, but unlike her counterparts Batman and Superman, this groundbreaking heroine has yet to be reinvented for the feature film arena.” “Wonder Woman is the most iconic female heroine of our time, but in a way, no one has met her yet,” Whedon said. “What I love most about icons is finding out what’s behind them, exploring the price of their power. When Joel and I began discussing the character, I realized there is a woman behind the legend who is very fascinating, very uncompromising, and in her own way, almost vulnerable. She’s someone who doesn’t belong in this world, and since everyone I know feels that way about themselves, the character clicked for me.” Wonder Woman will be produced by Joel Silver and Leonard Goldberg, and is based on the DC Comics character created by William Moulton Marston. Wonder Woman will be released worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

February 21, 2005: Sci Fi Wire talked to producer Joel Silver who confirmed that he is trying to sign “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” and “Firefly” creator Joss Whedon to write and direct a new Wonder Woman feature. “I’m trying,” Silver said at Wonder-Con in San Francisco on Saturday. “I’m trying to work a deal with Joss… I was just in the other room [where Whedon was talking about his upcoming SF movie, Serenity]. I don’t know if I could work that out. It’s a complicated deal to do, but I would love him to do it. It would be great if he could do it.” Silver said that Whedon came to him with a new twist on the venerable character. -Thanks to ‘Superherohype’ for the heads up!
