June 1, 2007: A few days ago, Michael Madsen was quoted saying that the poor performance of Grindhouse might affect whether Sin City 2 will be made. Not true, according to words from Frank Miller in a new interview at Rotten Tomatoes: Of course, by stroke of coincidence we learned just before we sat down with Miller that Robert Rodriguez had been signed onto a remake of the classic sixties sex flick “Barbarella.” So what of “Sin City 2″? Rumours swirl that the project has been stalled by the breakdown of Rodriguez’ marriage. “Sin City 2 is still likely to happen,” says Miller, “just not right away. The script is written and Robert and I are raring to go, but it looks like I’m going to be doing The Spirit first and Robert’s going to be doing Barbarella first.” -Thanks to ‘Superherohype’ for the news!

March 28, 2007: As posted on Superherohype: “MTV talked to Sin City 2 co-director Robert Rodriguez and star Rosario Dawson about the anticipated film, which will tell one story this time that may include Johnny Depp and Antonio Banderas. Here are several clips from the article: “[Depp] was interested in doing the Jackie Boy character that Benicio [Del Toro] played [in the first one], but he was doing that movie ‘Libertine’ in Europe and it just kept getting pushed and delayed and went right through our shooting schedule,” Rodriquez said of the actor he directed in “Once Upon a Time in Mexico.” “But there is a better role for him in ['Hell and Back']. I kept going, ‘Gosh, Jackie Boy is a small part, he could be really good [as Wallace].’ When he wasn’t available, I thought maybe it was meant to be.” While no deal is in place for Depp at the moment, Rodriguez seemed coyly confident they would get the Oscar-nominated actor. The director was equally excited about potentially casting another of his old favorites, Antonio Banderas. “When I showed him the first sample of the work, he went, ‘Man I’ll do anything in that. I’ll be the hunchback. You have to bring me onboard, that looks amazing,’ ” Rodriguez recalled. “So Frank met him that time too and he said, ‘I have got to find something for that guy. I’ve never met him before. He’s amazing.’ [So we're] looking at the cast of characters and [looking] to see where he can fit.”

January 18, 2007: For a while now it has been pretty much accepted that Robert Rodriguez has wanted Angelina Jolie as the star of his sequel to “Sin City” sub-story ‘A Dame To Kill For’. Scheduling conflicts have prevented it though and caused enough delays that according to a rumour over at Cinema Blend, Jolie has been ousted in favour of British babe Rachel Weisz. The site, which clearly indicates that this is unconfirmed, says Rachel is in talks with Robert Rodriguez’s people about taking on the role of Ava Lord. If locked then shooting on the project would begin early 2008. – Thanks to ‘DarkHorizons’ for the news.

December 12, 2006: Superherohype/ComingSoon.net recently spoke to Angelina Jolie on her supposed role in Robert Roderiguez’s Sin City sequel: “We talked about it and I read the comic,” Jolie told us. “I don’t think the film is being made at this moment. When it’s actually going to be made I’m sure we’ll talk about it. “It was a funny thing, because the idea came to me when I was pregnant,” she added. “So it was this idea… I’ve been Clover (in ‘The Good Shepherd’), depressed and quiet, and then I was feeling very maternal, pregnant. It was this idea of this sexy, violent and loud [character]… I thought maybe after I’m pregnant it would be nice to do.” It sounds like Rodriguez and Miller have their Ava if everything works out. A start date for Sin City 2 has not been announced. In the graphic novel, Ava Lord is the dame to kill for. She is an ex-lover of Dwight McCarthy (Clive Owen) who manipulates men through her good looks and her supposed innocence.” Thanks to ‘RyanOC’ for the heads up!

March 14, 2006: SIN CITY star Rosario Dawson told SCI-FI that SIN CITY 2 is on hold while Robert Rodriguez waits for Angelina Jolie to birth her child. Dawson says, “The film’s been kind of postponed because Robert has been interested in Angelina Jolie for the lead…But she’s very pregnant right now.” So the rumours may be true after all. Interesting.

February 10, 2006: Rumour has it “Angelina Jolie is reportedly in talks to star in the sequel to Sin City. Movie bosses want her to play the dame in the film currently titled “A Dame To Kill For”. Other actors due to appear in the film are Clive Owen, Brittany Murphy, Mickey Rourke and Jessica Alba“. Thanks to ‘DarkHorizons’ and ‘TeenHollywood’ for the news!

November 4, 2005: As reported on ‘Superherohype’: Empire Online chatted with Michael Clarke Duncan who says it’s very likely he’ll star in Sin City 2. (Sin City Spoiler Ahead!) “Hang on, though… didn’t Manute die in the first Sin City? Well, yes, but the story that will form the basis for the Robert Rodriguez-Frank Miller sequel, A Dame To Kill For, takes place before Sin City: The Movie. So Duncan’s had a reprieve… now he just needs to get the nod from Frank’n'Robert that he’s returning. “We’ve talked about it. Manute has a very big role [in that] and I certainly wanna be a part of it. You’ll think, ‘didn’t he get killed?’ but Frank doesn’t do it in order. True fans will understand that.” Sin City 2 is expected to hit theaters summer 2006.

October 25, 2005: As reported on ‘Superherohype’: Variety reports that the Weinstein brothers’ newly formed studio, The Weinstein Co., will develop a Sin City TV series: ‘Also in the works are a [series] based on Dimension Films’ “Sin City” — which would follow in the footsteps of 2006’s second pic in Robert Rodriguez’s “Sin” series — and a [series] based on the Miramax title “Rounders,” capitalizing on the current craze for poker playing.’ – Pretty cool if you ask me. What do you think? Discuss on our boards!

August 24, 2005: “Sin City” scribe and co-director Frank Miller has revealed to Now Playing Magazine that he and director Robert Rodriguez are “working on the final touches of how the story [for Sin City 2] is going to work, and we’re right now planning to start shooting in January.” While this may seem like an accelerated timetable, the push can be attributed to the first film’s box office success as well as Rodriguez’s inability to remain idle. “Robert doesn’t mess around – he gets right to it,” Miller explains. It’s unknown at this time whether Miller will make another cameo in the new movie – in the first, he played a priest murdered by Mickey Rourke’s Marv character. Miller also notes that the plot for the second film will come from his acclaimed Sin City graphic novel A Dame To Kill For, “plus a new story that I’ve created for [the movie] that weaves in and out of the larger story.” This should comfort fans who are worried that the film franchise will end when the previously-published material runs out. As Miller puts it, “I don’t really plan on running out of [material] ’cause I’m still doing [the comics]. … There’s material in my head that could go on forever.”

August 1, 2005: Brittany Murphy tells OK! Magazine that she has signed to star in Sin City 2, which writers/directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller are planning for a summer 2006 release. “I’m absolutely thrilled. It’s exciting to be a part of something so big and artistically groundbreaking”, says Murphy, who played Shellie in the adaptation of Miller’s series of graphic novels. “I love the film and I’m ecstatic to be working with director Robert Rodriguez and the crew again,” she adds.

July 12, 2005: As reported on ‘JoBlo’: “It seems that Robert Rodriguez has his eye on Salma Hayek for a role in the film. While down in Mexico promoting SIN CITY he told newspaper Reforma with a laugh, “I always consider Salma for my projects, even for male roles.’ He added, “but yes, there is a character that suits her in this new movie.” What role it is remains to be seen but Rodriguez confirmed the sequel will be based off “A Dame to Kill For.” Could it be the titular female Ava? Rodriguez also added that Mickey Rourke is confirmed to return and while he didn’t mention Clive Owen, you’d almost assume he’d have to be considering “Dame” centers on his character.”

May 27, 2005: In an announcement of The Weinstein Company’s upcoming release date schedule, ComingSoon.net says that Sin City 2 is included for a summer 2006 bow.

May 23, 2005: While talking about Sin City at the Cannes Film Festival last week, co-writer and co-director Robert Rodriguez confirmed what storyline you can expect for the sequel. BBC reports: Rodriguez, who wore his trademark cowboy hat, said he was pleased to be in Cannes, the “home” of film noir. He added work had already started on a sequel to Sin City, and would feature many of the same characters. He added that the next film would be based on Miller’s book, A Dame to Kill For. Dark Horse describes “A Dame to Kill For” as follows: It’s one of those hot nights, dry and windless. The kind that makes people do sweaty, secret things. Dwight’s thinking of all they ways he’s screwed up and what he’d give for one clear chance to wipe the slate clean, to dig his way out of the numb grey hell that is his life. And he’d give anything. Just to cut loose. Just to feel the fire. One more time.

May 19, 2005: Frank Miller has already begun scripting Sin City 2, which he will co-direct with Robert Rodriguez, reports Screen Daily. The project will be jointly owned by Disney and the WeinsteinCo. Speaking at Cannes Film Festival’s annual luncheon for international distributors hosted by the Weinsteins, Miller said it was too early to announce casting but did confirm the project will be shot entirely on green screen, like the first film. -Thanks to ‘Superherohype’ for the heads up!

May 14, 2005: Reported on April 29 on JoBlo.com: “Now for the news that I’m sure most people will agree is absolutely great. Robert Rodriguez will be shooting back to back sequels for SIN CITY 2 and 3 starting February of next year for a release presumably summer of 2007. I guess the studio big wigs were satisfied with the commercial and critical appeal of the uber-cool SIN CITY that they jumped on the shooting back to back sequels bandwagon.” -Thanks to ‘JoBlo’ for the news!
